Health & Safety:
Totally Safe – I have never felt unsafe on campus. Police make regular patrols and call boxes are ubiquitous.

Scholar Hermit – No experience with nightlife as I mostly kept to myself studying.

Learning Much Without Awful Workload – Here at Austin College, I am glad for the education I've received. The history professors here really know what they're talking about and they know how to communicate their knowledge of the subject to their students without confusing them or overloading them with reading/writing. All of the professors have substantial knowledge/experience in the field, including former state historian Light Cummins. All of the professors also work with you personally, not just as a class.

Windy and Slightly Dangerous When Snows – It is windy but nice on hot days. It is tough when it snows because the sidewalks are not kept clear by physical plant. The professors don't cancel class which makes it difficult when you must decide to risk hurting yourself walking outside and your academics. But its also tough when the professor doesn't tell the students that they have cancelled class and we have to cross campus to find out when they teacher doesn't arrive to class.

Works With Students Well – The staff worked well with my family in I when there was a hassle with FAFSA. They held my scholarship and waited until it was approved and did not threaten to take it away because of a time limit. They kept us up to date on the entire process and made it an easy process.

Tough to Find Spots – It is nice that our parking is free but there is not enough parking close to the WCC. I am a student worker there and the employees I work with are older and have to walk long distances to get into their job, which sometimes causes them to be late. It would be nice if there was a designated lot for just employees and could be monitored by campus police department.

Power of the Greeks – The Greek life is average at school, there is plenty of functions that allow everyone on campus to attend. It is rough when there is no intended greek housing close to campus that allows more students to enjoy the parties safely.

Professors Are Very Helpful – I am majoring in Chemistry. I am actually having to double up on my courses for the next two years, but the professors here have been really helpful in planning out my schedule and making sure I take all of my courses.
College Senior 2012-07-26T19:10:54Z
Not Very Strict – I don't think the school has been very strict with the drinking that goes on. Some greek groups have been put on probation because they were caught having unauthorized parties, but that's all I've heard about.
College Senior 2012-07-26T19:03:40Z
Not Too Shabby – Most of my classes have been a decent size, except of course for the introductory science classes. Many professors are willing to help and answer questions; they aren't as intimidating as you think! Tutoring is always offered and available. Registration for classes, unfortunately, is the worst for the incoming class. Most of the classes offered are closed and the process for the first semester hasn't gone electronic for some reason...

My financial package wasn't too bad, although I wished I had more scholarships. Made many calls to the Financial Aid office the summer before my freshman year and they were very nice and helpful. But it's very hard to receive more financial aid from the school. Pretty sure the school offers only 2 scholarships you can apply for as a current student, so if you need more money, you're on your own.

Small School – AC is fun because of the community it builds, but it sucks because of how small it is too. There are chances to meet new people, but after you know a lot of people at school the chances of running into someone new are slim.

It is tough to just get by at this school, you ralley have to work to get good grades.

There are not true designate houses for the greeks, but everyone on campus know where they are. The parties are fun, but sometimes they can get a little rowdy.

I enjoy eating at the dining hall and find that there are always new options to taste. Although as the year goes on, there are less surprises, but that is to be expected of any cafeteria

Great for Greeks, Not Much for Others – While I don't have any specific problem with the school, you do find yourself often bored unless you are in a greek group. Me and my friends keep each other entertained but I do often wish that the school has more non-greek events on campus besides the occasional movie night.

I can always find a place to study, a place to hang with friends, or a place to just relax outside of my apartment between classes. The pub is always way too loud, but the WCC is almost always a good place to be.

Perfect 1/10 of the Year – At the beginning and end of the school year, the weather is absolutely beautiful. Sunny, warm and breezy. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the year, the weather is wet and cold. It snows around January-February but is more typically just wet and cold. Make sure that you bring some rain boots to campus.

You Think Premed Students Are Naturally Smart? Yeah, right. If you see someone who claims they are premed out partying every school night, it's because they have a good supply of vyvanse. No joke. The students who don't take ADHD prescription drugs are the ones that have absolutely no social life. Pre-med is extremely tough and takes away from all aspects of your social life. So, either give in and study all day long, or take some adderall and have fun in college. OR drop being premed, like 3/4 of the students do, and major in something 'easier' And if you have to take drugs for that, you are just plain lazy.

Very Diverse! Great Atmosphere for All Minorities. Austin College has a very diverse population of students. White students are a majority, but not by much. There is a wide range of Indian, Asian, and Black students. There is a significant amount of openly LGBT students, many different religions, and political views on campus. You will easily find a club dedicated to each of the different types of students at Austin College.

Mostly Fast-Food – Most of the off-campus dining is fast-food. Where there are a few chain sit-down restaurants, it's nothing spectacular, like Cheddar's or Chile's. There are a few local restaurants that I hear are very nice, but you have to know where they are to be able to find them.

Sherman Is a Questionable Town – While campus is safe, and there is a lot of on-campus housing, the off-campus housing around Austin College itself is often questionable. While there are some nice places and rent isn't bad, a lot of the houses are in poor condition or are in bad neighborhoods. If you want a nice place to live, you have to look on the other side of Sherman.

The fall is beautiful! Slightly cooler than the fall in DFW, the winter is always cold, but nothing ever ridiculous. It snows some during the winter, which is always nice in moderation. Bring your rain boots because the sidewalks flood when it rains!!

As AC is a very small campus, driving to school on a daily basis is unnecessary for most students, and many who live within a few blocks chose to ride bikes. However, there is very limited parking, especially for certain residence areas (Roo Suites parking is terrible). While there is enough room for everyone to get a spot, you may end up having to walk halfway across campus just to get to your destination. Campus PD can also be a stickler for parking regulations and will not hesitate to hand out parking tickets. However, having a car on campus isn't entirely necessary, as the whole campus can be traversed in ten to fifteen minutes.

Some People Get Screwed. There's a lot of good and bad things about the housing on campus. You have to live on campus for three years. The good thing is that the school just built some really awesome apartments that you can live in as a junior. They are practically making you live in dorms your freshman and sophomore year now, juniors are treated like royalty and get to choose first from three different places to live, and seniors get the boot. The system is pretty corrupt. The good thing, if you and your tentative roommates have a great GPA when applying for junior living, you will get what you want, if not, you might not even make it on the list to live in any of the places offered. So you pretty much get screwed. Don't slack off, or plan to live with those who slack off, or you'll be stuck in Bryan Apartments. (Which hopefully are being redone right now.)
Sorry, there are no reviews.
