Austin College is a great liberal arts school, but it is not (and should not) be defined by its football team, which has gone 0-10 for the past couple years. They won the 1981 National Championship, but the program has since gone downhill. However, for those students who thrive in an athletic environment, the teams provide an outlet for them while they gain an outstanding education. While the football team is not the best in the division, there are a few teams that excel. The softball team is gaining traction under a new coach, and the volleyball team has dominated for years, as has the tennis team. The diving team is also fairly decent, with the swimming team behind them.

Shermanites outnumber students at most games. Sadly, game attendance from the student population does not extend much outside of the sports kids and their friends. There is a group that shows up to many games, but they number few, and most students do not show up to any game ever. However, everyone always has Roo Pride and is happy for a team when they head to a big tournament or to the playoffs.

There is also the option for students to join intrarmural sports, friendly games with bragging rights and a T-shirt going to the winning team. Most Greeks play each sport, with organizations and dorms making up a few teams as well. The athletic facilities are something to brag about even if some of the teams aren’t. The Mason Complex houses a workout facility, two basketball courts, and a natatorium that can be used by students when the teams aren’t practicing. Most students take full advantage of this privilege, especially the workout facility.
