All AC students are required to live on campus for six semesters (four semesters for transfer students), so by the time their senior year rolls around, most students are champing at the bit to get the chance to live off campus. It is exciting to venture out of the bubble of Austin College. Though on campus housing does come with the benefits of meals and cleaning services, most students agree that escaping the Residence Life staff and gaining some personal freedom is much needed after being under the watchful eye of the college for three years. It is possible that living off campus can even save you money; it just depends on where you choose to set up house. Either way, the freedom of it all makes it all worth it.
AC is in the midst of residential neighborhoods that have countless houses to rent, beging for student use, and since students can only live off campus their last year, there is constant turnover in the rental market. There are a few duplexes within a block of campus, and most other options, including affordable duplexes and houses that are rented by students every year, are within three or four blocks of the school. Most of the students who live in these neighborhoods walk to class. Students who live in some of the apartment buildings further off campus have to drive to campus. Many students visit their friends off campus and end up renting their houses when they move out. The quality of off-campus housing depends greatly on who lived there before you. Other than a few houses and duplexes used as party houses, many of the rental duplexes are new or freshly renovated. There are many houses that don’t look like much from the outside but are great inside, and if you're lucky, you might get a landlord who is an AC graduate or an AC professor who will give you a great rate.
