College Prowler Take

Varsity sports are very competitive, contrary to popular belief that just because Babson is in Division III, it cannot be competitive. In terms of popularity, it is true that few students attend games, but it’s not true that few students play them. Considering the small-school atmosphere, neither the game attendance, nor athletic involvement can possibly be compared to other Division III giants. Sports are very important to the athletes that play them because they put in considerable amounts of time into practice, meets, games, and races. Intramural sports involvement is slowly increasing, with more teams joining in the fun each year. Coed volleyball is by far the most popular sport. The rugby club usually does considerably well in their games, and more than a hundred spectators occasionally show up to watch them in their battles. Playing these sports helps students de-stress and keep in shape.

Attendance is important to the athletes involved. However, athletics are not an integral part of the social life for most Babson students because they come here to excel in academics, which can explain why attendance at games has been very sparse. One reason, among several, why not many people show up to games is that there are so many other activities (mostly academic) that are held at Babson daily. Altogether, a majority of students form intramural teams, where they can make up team names and have fun playing with friends.

It’s a Division III school, so we don’t go crazy. But basketball games have been great in promoting school spirit recently.

Varsity sports aren’t that popular on campus. A few sports, especially basketball and hockey, draw nice sized crowds. Other than that, most sports don’t draw many people’s attention. Each sport by itself is very strong. Every year, Babson wins a few conference titles in basketball.

I’m not part of a varsity team, and I don’t play intramural sports. For the most part, the people in those groups tend to stick together and associate with each other.

Many people do not attend sporting events at Babson, but plenty of people seem to participate in a sport. There are many different intramurals to choose from for those who don’t wish to compete on a varsity level.

Varsity and intramural sports are so much fun at Babson. Students love to work hard and play hard. Basketball and baseball have great reputations, and many of the other programs score big during their seasons. It’s great to be a part of a team physically running or batting or throwing because it only enhances your Babson experience. You really get to feel at home with your team, and they become a support system all four years.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Lunder Fitness Center - The Lunder Fitness Center is a 4,000-square-foot facility filled with state of the art equipment. Free weights, rubber dumbbells, and plate-loaded machines fill up the enormous gym. Most of the equipment is in good shape, and if it’s not, it usually gets replaced fairly quickly with a new version. Non-varsity and varsity athletes find time to work out between classes, because the gym is usually full by mid-afternoon.
  • Morse Swimming Center - The newly renovated Morse Swimming Center features a six-lane, 25-yard pool and one and three meter diving boards. The Babson swimming team and local high school teams dominate the pool, so free swim hours are limited.
  • PepsiCo Pavilion - A multipurpose field house with rubber style flooring, PepsiCo Pavilion issued for intramural sports, recreation, and varsity spring team practices. The basketball courts are almost always full, entertaining the crowds or individuals walking through the hallway on their way to the pool or the varsity weight room.
  • Staake Gymnasium - This wood-floored gym is home to the volleyball and basketball teams. Staake has the capacity to seat 750 spectators, and has been full to capacity during basketball games. The arena is surrounded by a six-lane, 200-meter track, where the track team practices each spring and part of the winter. This track looks nice from a distance, but it lacks in cushioning and may be the cause of an occasional backache or shin splint.
  • Varsity Weight Room - This gym is mainly utilized by varsity athletes, and team reservations are made at the start of each season by coaches. The equipment here is newer than at the Lunder Center, but it is much smaller and does not have all the equipment that the latter offers. That is why it is primarily used for team workouts, which are planned and outlined by the coaches, rather than individual workouts.

Getting Tickets

There is no need to get tickets to attend a Babson College sporting event if you are a student. Although the basketball games tend to get crowded, most other sports games are only spotted with spectators. The Babson hockey team sometimes charges a small fee to the local Wellelsey residents who attend their games.

Most Popular Sports

On the varsity level, basketball games have the largest presence on campus. Volleyball and basketball are the intramural favorites on this campus, while club sports are gaining popularity in men’s rugby. Rugby guys are known for their infamous parties before and after almost every game, making it attractive for their friends and even newcomers to watch them battle the opposing teams.

Most Overlooked Teams

The varsity cross country and track teams consist of very dedicated individuals who perform well at meets, but people shy away from traveling to watch them compete.
