Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Technology is a very important aspect in any business environment, and Babson is very good about getting the newest computers, software, and other hardware. Babson makes sure to educate students about information technology in their first-year classes and gives them the option to take more advanced classes on management information systems (classes that emphasize how to build a Web page or set up a managerial computer program). Technology has been updated constantly at Babson. The installation of wireless Internet access in all dorms has improved not only the social college life but also the academic life at Babson. Now, students are free to walk around their dorm and complete assignments in groups or with a friens and no longer have to worry about finding an outlet for their Internet cable. Laptops are also distributed to first-year students in the fall. Babson’s two-year laptop renewal system works because students get a new laptop every two years, which isn't something to complain about when you are not paying for it out of your own pocket.

It takes approximately a month for an average student to get accustomed to the type and amount of work that’s required to be done on a computer, which are used in class for taking notes, building financial statements, and quantitative project analyses. Since everyone owns a computer, the labs are mostly empty—even the updated 24-hour computer lab is underused. This may be considered a waste of space by the higher administration, but Babson students actually enjoy utilizing these computers for free printing of materials at their own leisure. They are seldom used in rhetoric classes but are always great for typing papers. Computers are more than just machines here—they are an integral part of life.

Constantly Connected

At Babson you'll find that people are always on the internet. We have wireless virtually everywhere (pretty much just the parking lots aren't connected). But this is a heavy load for the servers so the internet can be slow. Everyone is issued a laptop, so the public computers are RARELY used. Printing is unlimited, though the printers frequently jam because too many people try to use them at the same time (seriously people need to just go green! ...Babson joke, we love our green pride!!)
