Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

More than 70 countries are represented in Babson’s undergraduate student body. This statement alone shows that Babson is very culturally diverse. With the international population making up close to 20 percent of undergraduates, it is interesting to observe their visible impact on student life. This diversity gives students valuable experience, especially because students can practice their foreign languages right on campus. If you want to find international students, they are not hard to spot. Most hang out near the library door entrance with a cigarette in one hand, while talking away with the other to a group of equally-fluent students. It’s not surprising that many international students feel most comfortable and have more fun talking with other international students of similar ethnic backgrounds. Shared interests, beliefs, and habits are what bring these students into such tight clusters. This doesn’t mean that they don’t communicate at all with anyone else; it just means that most of their close friends consist of people with similar ethnic backgrounds. It’s also true that the campus lacks in terms of racial diversity. African Americans comprise the lowest percentage of undergraduates, followed by Hispanics.

Different cultural backgrounds make up this school’s atmosphere. Babson is well known for its international business program. This correlation between the international business concentration and Babson’s general program is interesting, and may be seen as an advantage to graduating students looking for jobs. Babson’s cultural diversity and its rankings in that field may also prompt managers to hire Babson graduates. Currently, many business transactions in our fast-growing global market involve at least some types of international interaction.

Political Activity

The political atmosphere at Babson College is not as liberal as on most other campuses. Students are generally not outspoken about their political views, although some politicians have come to speak at Babson. Many consider the student body to be on the Republican side, but most students are really just apathetic.

Economic Status

Babson College has a very diverse population, with students coming from different countries and states, but it is apparent that students from wealthy backgrounds dominate the Babson College population. Many students also comment that the international student population is considerably wealthier than many American-born students. Some students categorize the international population as “BISO” or the Babson International Student Organization.

There is a Christian Fellowship group on campus that holds meetings and goes to church on Sundays. The overall campus religious affiliation is low on campus, but the group does a good job relating their events to the Babson community.
