Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average Babson student looks well-groomed, well-dressed, and very intimidating to an outside observer and some students, too. But most people understand that the reason for such attire is purely to impress the professors who are in charge of giving out grades. If you get below the surface of this facade, you will probably find shared interests and even similarities in their personal lives. Most guys and girls, however, don’t entirely understand each other, and most don’t want to put the time into understanding. So, guys and girls meet up at on-campus parties or in classroom study groups.

That being said, a common challenge is that people who meet at parties can’t really get the true version of the opposite sex, because they are either intoxicated, or just want to hook up. This is where the difference between guys and girls is apparent. Guys see girls as either very snobby or standoffish because they don’t want to just hook up, in which case the guy tries to hitch a ride to Wellesley College, where the chances of meeting a girl rises incrementally since Wellesley is an all-girls school. The girl then thinks that all the guy really wants is to hook up, and she really does start acting snobby to get him off her shoulders. This is pretty much the lowdown on the relationships between guys and girls at Babson, for the most part.

Guys and Girls

I think there are some great guys and girls here at Babson. Everyone here wants to succeed and do well in life so it is nice to be among people who are similar. As an athlete, I surround myself with other athletes who are funny, smart, genuinely nice people. It is a community unto itself and I love being a part of it.

I would say that Babson kids are...

I would say that Babson kids are the same as kids in other colleges. We have a lot of foreign students and a lot of wealthy students. The kids can sometimes be competitive, and as a result, a little less friendly, but this is not always true. The girls are getting better looking with every year; I guess the guys are attractive. Most of the people here are pretty smart. The foreign students are usually more fashionable than the rest, but because most of the people have money here, they tend to look okay.

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Most students don't have a problem with social interaction; but both guys and girls have a tendency to be show-offs in and out of class. This characteristic does not stand in the way of meeting people at a Saturday night party, but it does have a direct effect on the day-to-day interaction between students. Student interaction is highly visible at the Trim Dining Hall, where most students come to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can see almost the entire school by watching the circular staircase that is situated in the middle of this great dining hall.

Hookups or Relationships?

Between the tough workload and the 60:40 ratio of guys to girls, relationships are not very common between Babson students. Although girls find guys attractive, they are constantly worried about their reputation in such a close-knit community. Guys tend to avoid relationships with Babson girls, but they do tend to form very close friendships. Therefore, hookups happen frequently, especially after a Saturday Knight Party or a Thursday Pub Night.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Much of the Babson curriculum—and even out-of-class activities—focuses on group-work. A simple interaction through a group project, a homework assignment, or a club event can sometimes start up a closer-than-usual friendship between a guy and a girl. There are also many on-campus parties that people attend, in hopes of meeting someone fun and possibly interesting enough to become a significant other. And when parties start to get boring, students can always explore the Boston club scene where they can meet people from other colleges, with Boston being the biggest college city in America. Also, winter months in the Northeast tend to make everyone feel a bit under the weather. When it gets cold outside, people seem to cluster in their dorms and rooms, watching TV or enjoying the company of their close friends with whom they tend to study. Early fall and spring are usually the prominent times for socializing with the opposite sex. It is fun to meet someone at a barbeque (which many organizations and sports teams try to organize in the fall), or even outside of Reynolds Hall (where kids usually sit to enjoy the sun with a refreshing smoothie). Webster Center is yet another place to meet a number of hotties, especially in the gym or on the upstairs indoor track.

Dress Code

Many wear either very fashionable or business-casual clothes to class, but J.Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch is the weekend style (for a lot of guys, especially). Dressing up for class is very important, not only for your social life but also for your in-class professionalism grade that the professor distributes. Some athletes, however, are brave enough to wear sports clothes to class, but most do that sparingly, and only if they have a game that they need to leave for early.
