- BDE - The Babson Dance Ensemble.
- BISO’S - A nickname for the International Students (it stands for Babson International Student Organization).
- Blackboard - A place on the Internet with student-specific schedules, class assignments, and most importantly, the class syllabus.
- Blackboard Postings - Students are sometimes required to type up assignments on Blackboard.
- CAB - The Campus Activities Board. This group is in charge of the social activities.
- Central, North, and South - The halls that make a semi-circle around the Quad.
- Coleman Hill - The steepest hill at Babson, on top of which Coleman Hall and Van Winkle Hall are located.
- Facilities - This is the cleaning and fixing crew.
- Forest - The only freshman hall on campus.
- ITSD - The Information Technology Service Department.
- Meals - You can use a certain amount of prepaid meals at Reynolds and Olin Halls; this is in addition to the Babson Bucks that are also on the OneCard.
- Munch Money/Babson Bucks - The money put onto your OneCard as part of the meal plan, so students and teachers don’t have to carry cash.
- SigEp - Sigma Phi Epsilon.
- Stalker Net/The White Pages - Babson’s computer page that shows a picture and some general information about the students, faculty, and professors.
- The BABO - Babson’s Public Safety personnel.
- The OneCard Office - The office where you can go to replace your card.
- The Players - The Babson Players is a student-run drama club.
- The Pub - Roger’s Pub.
- The Quad - The grassy area in front of Park Manor North.
- Webster - The Webster Athletic Center at Babson.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
- Cell phones are a necessity.
- Check your e-mail daily, or even twice daily. No, make that three times daily. Just check it a lot.
- Computers are more than a necessity. They will be your lifeblood.
- Get the largest possible meal plan.
- Go to McCullough parties.
- Go to the Pub on Thursdays.
- Skip “Playfair” during Orientation.
- The workload is going to be heavy.
- Time management is key.
Tips to Succeed
- Ask teachers tons of questions.
- Dispute bad grades if you think they are unfair.
- Don’t be shy.
- Don’t fall behind in the business classes.
- Don’t pick the advanced classes before completing the ones below those.
- Get on Instant Messenger if you’re not on yet.
- Research professors before choosing your classes. Having a professor who knows about his subject and cares about his students makes all the difference.
Urban Legends
- The inventor of the magnetic strip on credit cards taught at Babson College.
- The school lost all of its endowment after the September 11th attacks.
Traditions
- Casino Night - During Parents Weekend, students and parents are invited to spend an evening together. Babson sets up a bunch of tables with card games, roulette, and other fun activities. Wine is provided for those over 21, making this event even more fun and memorable than expected.
- Greek Sing - Greek Sing is an annual event where Babson’s Greek organizations perform original song and dance routines to support a local charitable organization. Every March, the fraternities and sororities compete to raise money for a good cause and to see which Greek organizations can put on the best show.
- Mr. and Mrs. Babson Competitions - These typically friendly contests allow anyone to enter and try to obtain the Babson crown, and the large amount of money, which is the main prize. Students compete on the basis of their looks, smarts, and talents. This competition is usually held in the over-filled Knight Auditorium, and is one of the favorites among students.
- The BDE Performance - The Babson Dance Ensemble is recognized for its amazingly choreographed dances and awesome lighting. Shows consist of everything ranging from ballet to hip hop, with a large number of students performing in multiple dances. Their shows are usually very entertaining and are held once a semester, in the fall and the spring.
- The Multicultural Festival - The festival consists of student organizations and clubs, most of who cook food and present it to the Babson public. In the past, this cultural gathering even consisted of a Kata performance by the martial arts club, and is open to other sports clubs on campus.
- The Scavenger Hunt - A team-based activity where teams of five compete against each other in hopes of getting all the items listed. These teams usually stay up for the whole night, trying to be the first ones to obtain the items. The first place prize for this game is over $1,000, so students are pretty serious about it. This game also requires at least one car, because students need to travel over 60 miles to get some of the items.
School Spirit
Although students don’t want to admit it, they are proud that they got into Babson. They are also swollen with pride after they finish their first year at Babson. In-classroom competition is where the spirit really kicks in. There, the overconfident students add fun and interesting dynamics to some of the less-entertaining classes. Finance and Accounting Majors feel exceptionally special to be part of Babson’s curriculum. That is actually true, because these majors regard themselves as tougher and smarter than all other majors. Babson clothing and gifts are also seen all over campus, showing that students are proud to be at Babson and like to purchase these products. These things are even said to be the highest-margin goods at the Babson Bookstore. Although sports events are not too populated, they are recognized by faculty and the student body through online posting on the Athletics Web site. When a team wins a championship, the news travels fast and mostly everyone knows the game score. School spirit at this school is a bit underrated because of the poor sports attendance, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that students don’t care for school spirit. They are just trying to manage their time better.
