Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most freshman students at BSU are required to live in the dorms, and as a freshman, the odds are pretty good you’ll be living in LaFollette. Students have mixed feelings about Ball State’s largest dorm. Some refer to it as the ghetto because of its dreary and institutional interior, large size, and cramped rooms. Others have fonder feelings for LaFollette, saying, despite its drawbacks, the dorm has a great sense of community. Students had better things to say about Stu-West, with its modern appearance and air-conditioned rooms. On the downside, they said the dorm lacked a sense of community. Many said this was likely due to the fact that all the room doors close automatically and have to be propped open. Students said this limits social interaction between residents.

Elliott Hall, with its castle-like exterior, old wooden doors and beautifully decorated lounge, is considered the campus’s most attractive residence hall. The dorm is across the street from the student center and right next to Elliott Dining Hall, an all-you-can-eat buffet. A drawback to living in Elliott is its location. Situated on BSU’s extreme south side, Elliott is far away from other residence halls and many of the academic buildings. Overall, Ball State students who moved off campus after their freshman year said they missed the social interaction they had experienced while living on campus but were willing to sacrifice it for the freedoms they had living in houses or apartments.

Living on Campus!

Living on campus is super convenient and the residence halls are great! By living in the halls you are closer to campus and its very convenient for food and classes. The halls are kept up really nice and the older dorms are being remodeled in the upcoming years.

On Campus

Campus life is not for me. I lived in the dorms for a year and a half and just recently moved into an apartment. I felt perfectly safe in the dorms however its just too crowded. There is always someone yelling or making noise so it makes it hard to study. The good part is always having dining and a work out facility available. Its also nice to be able to be so close to classes and save a little gas money. However, the ridiculous cost of on campus living is not worth it for some poor quality food and some run down work out equipment.
