Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Generally speaking, students say they feel safe around campus. Although violent crime is rare at Ball State, it’s important to remember that the University is like a city. There are 18,000 students around campus at any given time. Although the vast majority of them are law-abiding citizens—relatively speaking—there is that fraction of the populace that is criminal. In recent times, BSU has played host to a series of shootings, some of which made national news, and all of which were related to alcohol in one way or another. In an attempt to end the violence, the University and the city of Muncie have cracked down hard on parties and underage drinking. This has had an effect on Ball State’s social scene, which we will discuss in a later chapter.

Most students agreed the dorms are safe, but it’s still a good idea to lock your door when you leave, as theft can be a problem. Although it is made up of students, the night desk staff does a good job at stopping undesirables from getting into the dorms. Students coming in to a residence hall at night must have their card swiped by the desk attendant, and all guests must be signed in. Students agree the most important thing people need to do when it comes to safety and security at Ball State is to use common sense. If you know where you are, who you are with, and you aren’t being an idiot, you should be fine.

The on Campus Security Would Be Rated as Average

I feel safe for the most part on campus. The only thing that interfers with that is knowing about ever crime that occurs on campus. Anytime there is a crime on campus all students are notified via text or email. So I am very grateful to be informed on these happenings rather than them be "swept under the rug."

Safety and Security on Campus

The campus crime is pretty low we have an incident here and there but nothing too serious. I think our text messaging systems and alarms along with buttons on campus to press in an emergency are keeping students safe. I think the Muncie Police is very good about watching over our campus and students and that goes the same for the Campus Police. I feel very safe on campus and I think they alert us as quickly as possible and I think that it is a reliable system.
