Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Generally speaking, students say they feel safe around campus. Although violent crime is rare at Ball State, it’s important to remember that the University is like a city. There are 18,000 students around campus at any given time. Although the vast majority of them are law-abiding citizens—relatively speaking—there is that fraction of the populace that is criminal. In recent times, BSU has played host to a series of shootings, some of which made national news, and all of which were related to alcohol in one way or another. In an attempt to end the violence, the University and the city of Muncie have cracked down hard on parties and underage drinking. This has had an effect on Ball State’s social scene, which we will discuss in a later chapter.

Most students agreed the dorms are safe, but it’s still a good idea to lock your door when you leave, as theft can be a problem. Although it is made up of students, the night desk staff does a good job at stopping undesirables from getting into the dorms. Students coming in to a residence hall at night must have their card swiped by the desk attendant, and all guests must be signed in. Students agree the most important thing people need to do when it comes to safety and security at Ball State is to use common sense. If you know where you are, who you are with, and you aren’t being an idiot, you should be fine.

Safety and Security at Ball State University

Ball State University does an excellent job of making sure that its students both feel safe and are safe no matter where they are on campus. Every several feet you will encounter a "blue box" containing a red button that will immediately contact Campus Police if pressed, as well as a keyboard to make a phone call if necessary. Additionally, the campus alerts all students of any and all crime in and around campus, letting us know what crime has been committed, where the criminal was last seen, and whether we should stay inside or proceed with our daily lives, but with caution. I really do not have any complaints or worries regarding our campus security.

Walking Alone

I am a college sophomore. I am about 5'3" and 110 lbs. I often have to walk alone at night on campus after spending hours upon hours in the library. Usually, I would be very scared to walk alone; however Ball State gives us every opportunity to protect ourselves. The provide adequate lit paths, emergency call phones, and there is always a campus cop driving around. Ball State also from time to time offers self defense classes. I myself take precautions from becoming victimized by carrying pepperspray and always taking the well lit path opposed to the quicker but darker path.

Generally Safe

Police are usually around, though many seem focused on pulling over cars who exceed the campus wide 20 mile per hour speed limit. However there is an excessive amount of alcohol abuse on campus, which can make nights and weekends sometimes a dangerous time to be out alone. There is also frequent obvious underage drinking that goes unnoticed.
