College Prowler Take

Get away from the fry pits and chain restaurants, and you’ll find some pretty good places to eat in Muncie. Scotty’s Brew House, for example, is a popular bar in the Village that also features a solid menu with an emphasis on specialty hamburgers. In warm months, Scotty’s has an outdoor dining area which is popular with both students and Muncie residents. Although he is just a street vendor, you can’t talk about off-campus dining without mentioning Mark Carter. Commonly known as the “hotdog man,” Carter runs a stand in the Village on the corner of University Avenue and Dill Street. Students have been known to stand in long lines, even in January, for Carter’s famous chili-cheese dogs.

Mexican restaurant Puerto Vallarta is popular as much for its low-priced margaritas as it is for its food. Students agree that if you like Mexican food, Puerta is the place to go. Students think that Johnny Carino’s is probably the best value because it serves decent Italian food at relatively low prices. Despite these options, it is not uncommon for students to eat lunch on campus, especially at the Atrium food court. Students find eating on campus to be convenient, which makes up for the value and the overall quality of the food.

Johnny Carino’s is okay. It’s decent. It’s a good value for what you get. Some of the restaurants downtown are good, but they’re way too expensive.

I’m used to a lot of restaurants. There aren’t that many big restaurants here. They’re always really crowded.

Jimmy John’s. They deliver late, and they are just in the Village. The MT Cup is pretty good if you just want coffee-type drinks, but Jimmy John’s rocks.
