Best Time to Look for a Place

Because the best locations tend to get rented out quickly, it is a good idea to start looking for housing as soon as possible. Typically, students try to secure their housing for fall semester by Christmas break. If you don’t have something in line by spring break, you’re probably not going to end up with the house or apartment you want.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a growing minority of upperclassmen choosing to live on campus. The benefits of the Premium Plan, which include better parking and dining, are making it more common for students to stay in the dorms through their second and even third years. By junior year, most say they are itching to get off campus. Students say finding a good off-campus place to live is not difficult. There is a multitude of well-maintained houses and apartment complexes within walking distance of campus. Many students feel houses near the Village on streets like Dicks, Dill, and Martin are the best because they are close to many popular bars, restaurants, and the Ball State campus. Other students prefer living farther away in apartment complexes such as Windermere Place and Bethel Place, saying the rent is generally cheaper and they can just drive or ride a bus to class. Ball State juniors and seniors who stay in the dorms say the convenience of living near their classes and not having to cook or wash dishes is worth the sacrifice of living in a cramped dorm room. Still, this group is in the minority and is often looked at strangely by off-campus dwellers. This is mainly because of the limitations and rules imposed by the University. Except on one floor of Elliott Hall, alcohol is banned from the residence halls. Students cannot smoke cigarettes in their dorm rooms, and smoking marijuana can be a dangerous and complicated enterprise. Students who live off campus say they miss the social aspect of dorm life but are willing to sacrifice it for the freedoms afforded by living out of University boundaries.

Off-Campus Housing

The off-campus housing really depends on a persons taste. The better places I would say are over priced though.

Apartment Selection Could Be Better

There are a lot of places to choose from at a reasonable rate. However, they aren't of the finest quality. I know we are supposed to be students that live on a budget, but I still like nicer things. The town is kind of run down.
