Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although many of them don’t use it very often, Ball State students agree that Muncie’s public transportation system is reliable and convenient. MITS makes several stops on and around Ball State’s campus and is free to students. MITS buses generally make stops every 15 minutes. Still, the biggest complaint about the buses is that they don’t stop frequently enough for most students to use it. Couple this with a general disdain among Midwesterners for public transportation, and you can see why the MITS bus is usually pretty light on passengers.

When it comes to taxis, students are usually pretty loath to use them as well. Instead, they prefer to drive somewhere, ride their bikes, or walk. Even when going to the bars, very few students will call a taxi.

It's All About the Permits

At BSU, how good or bad your parking is depends entirely upon which permit you choose to buy. Students on the Premium Plan receive a complimentary purple permit as long as they are locked into the Premium Plan contract. The purple permit is the cheapest and most common of permits, but it is also the worst. Students must park off campus way out by the school's baseball field and/or alumni center. Other permits, such as green for commuters, red, yellow, etc. allow you to park on campus. One good aspect, however, is that parking on campus is free between 7pm-7am any day of the week, and it is free from 7pm Friday - 7am Monday every weekend, regardless of your permit. BSU shuttles are available to take students with purple permits out to their cars, but they are typically fairly slow, making the wait particularly difficult during the winter months (the bus stop is a partially enclosed small shelter with a heating unit that helps, but by no means makes the stop a warm place to wait). For those students looking to go off campus, the MITS bus system can pick them up on campus and take them anywhere in Muncie, including Walmart and the local Muncie Mall.

Transportation

Buses are the best transportation. Although the buses do not go to every place and you have to request to go to certain places. Also it is hard to get a ride back when you are dropped off at certain places that are not regularly on the bus route.

Ball State students receive GREAT transportation for FREE!

As a student at Ball State it's very easy to get around. First off, the school isn't huge so walking the length of campus isn't bad, but if you don't want to walk you can just hop on one of the free Ball State buses. They run before and after class hours during the week and part of Saturday and Sunday. If you're looking to go somewhere off campus you can get there via one of the MITS buses. They travel all over Muncie, stop a few places on campus, and are free to all Ball State students. Finally, if you just need a ride (usually at night), you can call Charley's Charter and get a free ride anywhere on campus.
