Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bard has done much to increase both the volume and potential of its on-campus computing, building a lab replete with top-of-the-line hardware, while also expanding the number of desktops available in the campus library. Film and music editing software has been installed in several local labs, lending new areas of creative possibility to dedicated artists and musicians, and the new Reem-Kayden Center provides state-of-the-art technology for science students. The student-to-computer ratio means that, most of the time, you won’t have much of a problem finding an available computer. During midterms and finals however, most Bardians seem thankful that they have a PC of their own.

While most classes don’t focus heavily on computer applications, some do involve gathering resources or communicating online. For instance, a lit professor might ask students to download and read a particular article kept in the college’s communal Web reserve. Some teachers require students to post critical analysis, calculations, or commentaries on weekly assignments online for both the professor and fellow classmates to look over and respond to. Furthermore, e-mail acts as the primary method of communication between students and professors outside of class. Yet, while computers are beginning to take on a larger role in Bard academics, they certainly have not received the attention common at other colleges, such as schools that teach entire classes online or hold Web-conferences, for instance. At Bard, most teaching is still done in the classroom, with computers on the periphery.

Wireless Is Fine, Printing Is Less So

The wireless network at Bard College is a rather stable and fast one. The computers in the computer labs are adequate for the needs of the student body. There is a range of PCs and Macs, and the printing system works well, although the printer in one of the main computer labs is often broken. Having your own computer is beneficial and I would say you "sort of need one" but one could make do with the computers provided around campus.

Bring a Printer

i can't speak much to the computers themselves; i don't know that they are really that problematic. however, it is difficult to find someone who has had a smooth process trying to print something at a computer lab; if they are open, the printers are probably not working.
