Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Bard area is packed with inviting and inventive places to eat. The immediate areas of Tivoli and Red Hook offer a healthy mix of Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and American cuisine. Broadway Pizza is a staple for all Bardians looking for a solid slice and cheap delivery. Taste Budd's, while a bit pricey, is a must for breakfast, lunch, and sweet treats. Panda provides affordable eastern food, and Osaka serves up some of the best sushi this side of the Hudson. Red Hook icons like the Village Diner and Billy’s Family Restaurant prepare dependable all-American burgers and fries, while Tivoli’s slightly more cosmopolitan spots, like the Black Swan, deal mainly in exotic Creole and Irish cuisine. Bardians willing to drive (or walk) only a few minutes will find themselves surrounded by delicious and affordable food, and that’s just the beginning.

Drive into Rhinebeck, Rhinecliff, or Kingston, and you’ll discover an even grander array of cafés and eateries. Rhinebeck boasts some of the best food in the Hudson Valley. Restaurants like Gigi’s, Terrapin, and Traphegan Restaurant attract diners from all over, while relative newcomers like Calico and 40 West continue to redefine the meaning of creative cuisine. Most of the food in Rhinebeck is reasonably priced, but some restaurants border on the wrong side of expensive. Drive a little further into Hyde Park and check out the Culinary Institute of America (a.k.a. the CIA), which is the valley’s hub for new and interesting food.

Off-Campus Dining at Bard College

There aren't necessarily a lot of options that are easy to get to, but the restaurants in Red Hook and Tivoli (both accessible on the Bard Shuttle) are pretty good. There are definitely inexpensive options at Taste Budds and the Golden Wok in Red Hook, and Osaka in Tivoli, though Osaka can get pretty expensive. And if you can catch a ride to Rhinebeck, there are a lot more excellent restaurants in the area. Across the river in Kingston, there are a lot more chain restaurants, which are usually pretty affordable. The main problem is transportation.

Need a Snack?

The food off campus is pretty tasty, the cost isn't so bad, there are no student discounts and not much variety after awhile. But better than kline food!! During the day its convenient but in the evening it gets a little more rougher and at night there all closed (small town)

Everyone Loves Taste Budds

There are many nice little places to go in the surrounding towns. The problem is, without a car it is not super easy to get to the surrounding towns (Redhook, Rhinebeck, Tivoli). There are shuttles, though, and those who are car-less are frequent passengers. In Redhook, there are at least four low-cost eateries which welcome Bard students and have delicious food/pleasant atmosphere. Tastebudds tea house and chocolatier is particularly popular. Also in Redhook there is a natural foods health store and this is also a great place to get ready-to-eat food or regents for cooking. Rhinebeck is less popular and Tivoli is more expensive, but, all in all, there are many options from which to chose.
