Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because more and more people seem to be bringing cars to Bard, parking in some on-campus places has become an overnight hassle. Many students, particularly those hailing from the New England area who initially choose to leave their vehicles at home, will end up retrieving it before the end of their sophomore year. A few years ago, finding a spot in front of Olin was a cinch, but today it’s nearly impossible. Elsewhere on campus, the parking scene is not quite as frustrating. There are usually ample parking spaces near most dorms and in the lots by the library, gym, and the Campus Center. Plus, Bardians have the benefit of free parking. Yet, if the number of autos on campus continues to escalate as it has, the result could approach a campus-wide epidemic.

Many students are resistant to the idea of building more parking lots. New lots means the destruction of century-old forestland—a travesty both to the environment and to Bard’s own unique aesthetic. Some have suggested instead that freshmen be deprived of their right to bring cars to school with them. While this might raise a stink among the incoming class, as well as force Bard to revamp its current public transportation system, it might also help to alleviate a potential parking crisis. As it stands, parking in most places at Bard is still unproblematic, but perhaps not for long.

Lazy Security

Simple rule with this, if you park in the student lots security doesn't check your car for a parking permit. Therefore free parking. Finding a place to park is simple as well. I've never had to look in more then one lot for parking because most of the students will take the shuttle in from town or have their car already on campus and will walk to class.
