Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Given Bard’s remote, rural location, and the obvious lack of any urban-type public transportation, many students find having their own car essential. However, the school does supply adequate means to get around, if you’re willing to wait. Bard’s shuttle system runs on the hour, transporting students across campus and to several stops throughout surrounding Tivoli and Red Hook. However, off-campus students living in the more out-of-the-way parts of Red Hook and Tivoli will soon find that they have a long walk ahead of them after the shuttle drops them off in the center of town. A nice feature of Bard’s transportation system is that, on weekends, the shuttle runs late, usually until at least 2 a.m., and provides partiers with a safe ride home from the bars.

Students living off campus have been known to survive using just the shuttle. It is advised, however, that if you’re going to live in Red Hook or Tivoli with a group of friends, make sure at least one owns a car. This way, transportation is available in case of emergencies. Also, activities like grocery shopping become much easier when you have a trunk and your own set of wheels. When all else fails, and considering the weather is nice, there are plenty of scenic back roads to carry the adept biker to most local destinations.

Shuttles Are Nice, but..

While the school offers shuttles to nearby locales, this does little to remedy the crippling isolation that Bard suffers from.

Shuttles, Trains, and Zipcars All Available

Campuswide shuttle that picks up every hour, goes to local town as well. Area shuttles on the weekends and certain weekdays take you to other nearby towns, as well as the Amtrak and Poughkeepsie train station

Horrible

i haven't noticed the shuttles to be as irregular as others have, although i do have friends who have been stuck at train stations waiting for a shuttle that never came. they definitely aren't really accommodating for the number of people that make use of them. more than once i have felt like i was in a mosh pit trying to get on the bus. once i got my purse ripped off in the crowd and then stepped all over as i tried, to no avail, to alert the bus driver. sometimes they will cap it at 35 passengers, sometimes they will stuff it full of bodies. also, it is pretty difficult to fly in and out of the area if you don't have a car.
