Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Through the Barnard and Columbia consortium, Barnard girls play varsity and club sports on Columbia’s teams, which affords them the opportunity to compete on a larger scale than they would if Barnard had its own teams. This isn’t a huge deal, however, because Columbia’s sports aren’t good at all, and no one watches them. You could ask twenty Barnard students what the score was at the Columbia football game, and not a single person would be able to tell you. In fact, most students can’t name anyone on any of the varsity teams, or tell you where the field is or what it’s called. The athletic offices always make claims that Columbia is going to come back, or that this year will be the big year, but student just don’t take them seriously. There’s just so much to do in New York that Barnard students don’t have time for college football at a stadium that’s nowhere near campus.

Playing sports and being active is great, so many people take advantage of the club and intramural sports, but very few can or want to afford the time commitment that varsity sports demand, especially for teams that aren’t very good. The sports facilities could be better, but it’s easy to see why the administration wouldn’t want to put money into something that students aren’t really that interested in, anyway. At Barnard, you can find ways to get involved with athletics and be active, especially on a non-competitive level, but just don’t expect to go cheer for the team at Homecoming.

Not a Huge Prescence

I am in the horseback riding club, which I love, but that is a joint club with both Barnard and Columbia. I think that's how most of the sports are here. Its nice because its a great way to meet people, but Barnard's main attraction and focus is definitely not athletics (Unless the Greek Games count...).

What Athletics

I mean come on, Barnard isn't really known for it's athletics so if that's what you are looking for don't come here. On the other hand though there are a lot of great clubs and teams available.

History

I haven't been to a sports game...

I haven't been to a sports game the whole time I've been here. I want to, but I don't really find out about them—sports aren't on my radar. And honestly, I have better things to do.

School Spirit

Barnard women really love their school. Each year this school spirit really comes out during the “I Love BC” spirit day. Of course, Barnard students love their school year round, but this is really the only time that it comes out. Sometimes it is hard to identify as a Barnard student when fewer people know Barnard as compared to Columbia, and most students really feel as though they are part of both communities, given that everyone takes classes together and Barnard girls don’t have their own athletic teams.

Getting Tickets

Columbia or Barnard sports are not very popular, and getting tickets is usually quite easy. They can be purchased online at www.gocolumbialions.com/comm/tickets.html or by calling the ticket office at (212) 854-2546.
