College Prowler Take
Everyone realizes that Barnard doesn’t have a large student body, so ethnic diversity in small numbers counts for a lot. However, there’s not much political or religious diversity to be seen on campus, and one might argue that this is just as important as ethnic diversity when it comes to the enrichment of students’ lives on campus. The key reason for diversity on campus is that it brings groups together for different causes, like Republicans and Democrats conversing because of their religious or ethnic commonalities. Just like many other schools, Barnard has many people of different races and cultures, but for the most part, these people tend to stick together. It’s great that there’s diversity on campus, but there’s no point in having it if no one mingles. It’s really not fair that the school is looked down upon for this, when ultimately it’s the reposibility of the students to get involved with diverse groups on campus. Barnard does try to foster diversity on campus, especially ethnic diversity, with organizations such as the McIntosh Activities Council’s Multicultural Committee, which puts on the One World show each year. Overall, Barnard does try to be very diverse. It’s just the students who don’t cooperate that give the college a sort of clique-ish feel.

It's very diverse racially, ideologically, and sexually. Politically, it is very liberal. Economically, most of the students seem upper class. If they are lower class, they try to hide it.

Barnard is very diverse on all counts—range of wealth, ethnicities, and sexual preferences. It's mainly liberal and Democratic, but you can't expect anything else from New York.

FactsEconomic Status
Although there is a large economic range when it comes to Barnard students, the trend is overwhelming more affluent. There are a few girls that come from more of a modest upbringing, but most are either wealthy or pretend to be.
Gay Pride
Barnard is a very tolerant atmosphere for homosexuals, and the gay community tends to be relatively visible on campus. Their relationship with the straight community is one that indicates that sexual orientation is not divisive on campus.
Minority Clubs on Campus
Although many Barnard students complain about the lack of diversity, there are quite a few minority clubs. You really don’t hear about them doing too much during the school year, except for a small event here and there. The clubs you hear about most often are Latina clubs, which tend to be quite active despite their relatively small proportion on campus.
Most Common Religions
There is a large Jewish population at Barnard that is very visible and tends to stick together. Christianity is also popular in terms of numbers; however, their religious presence is not felt on campus as much as the Jewish presence is.
Political Activity
Not everyone on campus is active politically, but those who are are very visible. Expect to have to defend your political stance if you voice it on campus. The campus always becomes more politically charged around presidential election years, but you can always find some ideological company in Republican, Democratic, or other clubs, no matter when you're looking to get involved.
