Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students have never had specific dealings with the campus security, but they all know where to go should they ever need them. Barnard’s security is very visible, which probably one of the greatest reasons that there‘s so little crime in the area, at least as it pertains to Barnard students on campus. There are security guards at every entrance into Barnard and at three other booths along side streets where Barnard dorms are located. There are also desk attendants in all of the dorms who must check for Barnard or Columbia ID before they allow you to enter the building, or if you have a visitor, the desk attendant must sign them in and keep their ID until they leave. Aside from the visibility of Barnard security, they also provide an escort service that will drive students between dorms, or to different ends of campus if they ever feel unsafe walking around campus late at night. Most students haven’t even used this service, but it’s always comforting to know that it’s there. Most people know when they come to Barnard that the campus isn’t located in the best part of town, but once school starts, very few feel concerned about their safety while on campus.

The only place that security loses points is that their role on campus is not clearly defined. Many students are not sure which incidents fall under the responsibility of campus security and which are the responsibility of city police. While the security officers are able to escort suspicious people off of campus, they have no authority to detain anyone as the police can. They also aren’t able to do anything legally if something is stolen. Again, Barnard security is very good at creating a safe-feeling atmosphere for students to live and study in, but beyond that, they really don’t do much more.

Safest Place in the City

For being in the middle of New York City, Barnard is surprisingly safe feeling. There are large gates around campus that are locked at night, except for one which has a guard 24/7. There are public safety officers patrolling around. They give you a lot of advice about how to be safe around the city during orientation, so listen to those rules. And, like at most colleges, lock your door to avoid any theft.

Very Safe

Very safe. Every once in a while, you would get e-mails about people getting mugged but it comes down to common sense. you live in a big city so don't leave your laptop unattended in the library or don't decide to walk home on the backstreets at 4 in the morning. personally, i've never felt threatened as someone who has been out pretty much at every hour.

This makes me love Barnard

Barnard health services are amazing! The health center is always open and available and will help you with any imaginable problem. On late nights or odd hours, you can call "clinician-on-call" which directs your call to nurses to answer your questions and tell you what to do in a medical emergency situation. In addition to being very helpful and extremely nice and friendly, Barnard's mandatory health insurance plan is also great. If you ever need to go to the emergency room/hospital, an escort will come knock on your door, direct you to a public safety van outside, which will drive you to the hospital, where an RA on duty will meet you and stay with you the whole time. You will then be escorted back in the van, never having spent more than a second alone. And you'll get a follow up email/phone call making sure you're ok and that you've had a fine experience with everything. And everything is completely confidential and cost-free. Another plus-Barnard prescribes really inexpensive birth control, no blood test, no long appointment, just a quick trip to health services to pick up the packs (they'll give you 6 at a time.)
