Advice on Finding a Job/Internship The Office of Career Development at Barnard is fantastic. They offer free help writing cover letters and resumés on a daily, drop-in basis. OCD also offers career counseling for those that aren’t sure what they want to do when they graduate. Because Barnard has such a great reputation for educating stellar women, many high-profile companies offer internships for either the fall, spring or summer semesters or year round. In the past, internships have been offered at ABC, NBC, MTV, the New York Times, Paper magazine, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the office of Senator Hillary Clinton, and Morgan Stanley. There really is a job or internship for everyone, including art galleries, sports teams, law firms, brokerage firms, or publishing companies. The internships range from no pay up to $15 per hour. The search for an internship is also quite simple. Students receive a username and password and are then able to search for jobs on the Internet. Another thing career services offers for Barnard students to make money is the Barnard Baby-sitting Service and the Barnard Bartending Agency. At the Baby-sitting Service, a student pays five dollars to register and is then able to search for jobs whenever it is convenient. The Bartending Service works nearly the same way, except students must take a $100 class to learn bartending skills. The best advice is to be persistent. If you can’t find a job that suits your needs at first, just keep looking because new jobs are added every day. If you still can’t find what you are looking for, make sure you drop by the Office of Career Development where they might be able to help you in your job search. Finally, I would recommend using the baby-sitting or bartending services to make quick money with a flexible schedule, but use OCD to help you find an internship or job that will really build your resumé. The best time to look for these jobs is either at the very beginning of the semester or the end of the semester before you’re looking to intern.
