College Prowler Take

There is an amazing amount of choice when eating off campus at Barnard, both in the immediate vicinity of the campus and all over New York City. You can find even the most obscure cuisine somewhere in the city. Near Barnard there is a lot of Italian, Chinese, and French food, although most restaurants cater to students since they are pretty much the only people that hang out around Columbia and Barnard. Almost all of the restaurants around campus deliver, so when it’s cold and you don’t want to go outside, you can still eat pretty well. Pertutti’s isn’t great in terms of quality of food, but for the price, it’s a pretty good deal, and Famiglia and Koronet’s serve lots of huge, greasy slices of pizza. Deluxe On Broadway serves the best brunch around. The best restaurant around campus is probably Le Monde because it’s close and serves great tasting food. It is a little bit more expensive than the other restaurants nearby, but it’s also much nicer inside without being so nice that you would need to change clothes before going to eat there.

The choices that Barnard students have are amazing. The only problem is that choice and quality come at a price, and lots of times, in New York City, that price is very high. It’s great that Barnard students have so much variability, but it is very frustrating to many people that they can’t take advantage of the wide range of dining options because of financial constraints. Although dining hall food is good, it’s hard to eat there when all you can think about is sushi or fabulous Italian.

There are some good places near campus like Pinnacle and Koronet’s that are open late night. Caffè Swish has good bubble tea, and Tom’s is the best diner. Make sure you try Tomo for sushi.

Since a lot of people like to complain that walking over to Amsterdam is just too far (although in reality it’s only one block away), then you may want to try out Symposium, a Greek restaurant on 113th between Amsterdam and Broadway. They have a flaming cheese dish, great gyros, and Sangria that could rival a Spanish restaurant. The prices are moderate, and during the summer they have tables on a little patio in the back.

There are a wide variety of restaurants to choose from in the Barnard and Columbia neighborhood. Because Columbia prefers to promote independent businesses, you won’t find a Wendy’s or a Burger King. If you’re absolutely dying for a Big Mac, the closest fast food is on 125th Street.

There is some pretty good food around campus, but it is very expensive. Try going a little more downtown if you can, such as Big Nick’s on 77th Street. It is not the best in decor, but there’s good food.
