Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Barry is a private, Catholic university with high standards when it comes to education, and it will do everything it can to make sure its students are up to par with college standards. The University has intermediate math and English courses for entering freshmen who are a little behind in these two areas, but if you take a placement test and do well, you can take college-level courses in place. The professors at Barry care about their students and provide challenging coursework to make you think, and if you're a business student, you will never be able to slack off. Barry is especially known for its medical training and will only accept the best work from its students. So, if you feel you will be able to just relax and get by, you are applying to the wrong university.

Students can take as many courses as they want, but at the end of the day, only the ones that fulfill general education and major requirements will count, so look up your major's requirements and make sure you are taking exactly what the syllabus indicates. But you don’t have to figure it out all on your own—your adviser is there to help you follow the right path. The grading scale at Barry is different than high school and possibly other colleges. You can technically pass a class with a D, if the class isn’t a general ed course or within your major. However, if you ever receive such a grade, your GPA will drop dramatically, so you still lose. Your GPA is your ticket to scholarships and success at Barry, so it is a good idea to keep it up. The required GPA to stay off academic probation is a 2.0, but only individuals who really slack get a GPA like this. College is challenging, but if you do your work, the professors will work with you as well. At the end of the day, schedule the correct classes, work with your professors, and do everything you can to maintain a good GPA.

Great Academic Advisors

My academic advisor makes herself available to meet with students and takes the time to advise students on what the course work for each class is like and what she classes you would be able to manage.

The workload of the program is both challenging but manageable. The courses is designed to educate the students on the practical and theory of public administration The information can be used to implement programs at work.

Has Its Ups & Downs

I have had varying experiences with my education at Barry University. Some of the required classes are ridiculously easy and worthless, in my opinion. I understand that for people who have not used Microsoft Word or Excel before, a one-and-a-half hour, semester-long class on how to use these applications might be useful, but to make it a requirement for every student, even those who have been using these programs for the past 10+ years, does not make much sense to me. The workload given is very small; I find that I am hardly challenged here. My high school challenged me twenty times more than this university has. The majority of my professors have been great--they are available to meet with you if you need help with something, and because there are very small classes, most know me by name. My academic adviser is incredibly helpful as well.
