Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Barry University has eight on-campus halls and several off-campus housing facilities. Freshmen have several choices, including Dalton-Dunspaugh and Weber, which are for first-years only. Dalton-Dunspaugh is coed but is divided into male and female wings with huge rooms, lots of closet space, and daily cleaning services. Dalton is made up of suites, with every two rooms sharing a bathroom, and Dunspaugh residents share a community bathroom. Weber Hall houses female first-year students. There are many room types to choose from in Weber Hall—the singles are really nice, and the shared rooms are huge. If you're lucky, you will get a room with an amazing view of the pool, the palm trees, and the horizon. Weber also has a game room with pool tables, televisions, couches, and more. Browne, Flood, and Sage halls house both freshmen and upperclassmen, and there are no community bathrooms here—a bathroom is shared between two rooms. John and Neta Kolasa Hall and Benincasa Hall, which are mirror images of each other, are for upperclassmen. They each have singles and doubles, which come with their own private bathrooms.

There are also University-owned apartments for students. Holly House Apartments, about two blocks from main campus, offers one- or two-bedroom units with full kitchens. The complex has gated-access, a pool, and onsite laundry facilities. Saint Catherine Apartments are across the street from Barry and offer basically the same amenities as Holly House, but residents also get reserved parking. University Villa Apartments offers housing to female students only. Barry also offers theme housing, which is reserved for clubs and organizations, like sororities and fraternities.

Mediocre.

Cost is way to much for the little bit of things we are offered. Housing is not in good condition. Mold is usually seen in very dorm. The people on campus are nice though.

Save Yourself By Not Coming!!!!!

I SWEAR THIS SCHOOL IS BOGUS!!!!! First of all, I live in the freshman dorms so I live with immature, spoiled females. They are always screaming up and down the halls and the Resident Assisstants are too friendly so they won't do their jobs. Girls are always bringing their boyfriends or whatever they are to them to their rooms and they basically live in there because they NEVER leave. My suitemates spend an entire hour in the shower with their boyfriends and stay up all night like they don't have class in the morning. Sometimes you can even hear them having sex. But what topped all of this was my new roommate for the spring semester. She has NO HYGIENE!!!! She doesn't wash her hands and hardly bathes, and when she walks in the room, she smells like feet and she makes the entire room smell horrible. She also has a rude attitude. Resident Life didn't even tell me anything about her before moving her into my room. I can't wait to move out!!!!!!

Terrible First Year Experience.

I have had (and have seen & heard of others having) so many problems with on-campus housing. The first room I was assigned had a pool of water on both sides of the suite the day I moved in, and this continued to happen every single time someone showered. The water from the shower would leak onto the bathroom floor, as well as THROUGH the walls and into the closets and both sides of the suite. My roommates and I had to clean the water up once or twice a day, and had many personal items damaged or ruined. This problem wasn't fixed until 3 1/2 MONTHS later. We also had a huge mold problem--mold all over the ceiling in the rooms and in the bathroom, causing all four of us in the suite to get sick for a month or more. The more minor of the problems in the first room included a sink that was coming loose from the wall, mold getting on our clothes and personal belongings, and the fire alarm beeping every minutes or so on a daily basis due to a low battery. These problems were not all addressed until late January, although we spent every single week pushing to have it fixed. We were moved second semester into a room just four doors down, and the first night there, our ceiling/air conditioning in the bathroom leaked and left a giant puddle of water. We reported this to the RA (the first person you're instructed to go to) the day after it happened, and also reported that the toilet was running constantly, and neither were addressed. Two weeks later, the toilet randomly started spewing water and filled the whole bathroom, and water again leaked through the walls and into the closets, and we had to use all our towels to stop it from coming through the doors and into the rooms. Our RA arrived a half hour later, and maintenance didn't arrive until an hour and a half later. When they got there, they asked us why we hadn't reported it yet, to which we replied that we had, and they said it would've been an easy fix if it had been handled before. Seven months later, our room is finally problem-free...knock on wood.

I have heard of many other people around campus having the same problems. Many of the dorms have had mold problems, which is especially dangerous if you have people with bad allergies, like two of my roommates do. The one thing that would prevent me from giving this an F rating is the fact that the rooms are pretty spacious, at least in Browne Hall. On my side of the room, there's room for a futon if I wanted/had one.
