Barry is in a really good location in southern Florida—there’s plenty to do immediately around campus, and 15 minutes on I-95 will get you to downtown Miami or South Beach. Although having a car is a plus, Miami’s public transportation is great. Students can take the bus anywhere they want for a few dollars, and there is even a stop right outside the campus gates. Miami also has yellow cabs, which are convenient. Although the campus bookstore has school supplies and necessities like toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, body wash, shirts, and hoodies, if you cannot find what you are looking for, Kmart is just five minutes from campus and Walgreens is about 10 minutes. Plus, there are many nearby restaurants for students on a budget, like Tokyo Bowl, T.G.I. Friday’s, Momma Jennies, and more. If you want to see a movie or do some shopping, Aventura Mall is the place to go. It has a huge movie theater and some of the best shops and restaurants in the city. And, if you’re into sports, Dolphin Stadium is 25 minutes from Barry.

Miami has a lot to offer, but at night, it is not a good idea to walk outside the campus gates alone. Some students over-exaggerate the crime rate, and many have walked outside the campus gates more than 100 times at night and have never experienced even a dog bark; however, just to be on the safe side, it is best to walk with a friend at night.

Need a Car

It's a lot to do in Miami but you do need a car in order to have fun and get around because the transportation system is very slow. You might feel stuck on campus if you don't have a friend with a car, and will be limited with the amount of fun things you can do.

Local Atmoshpere

Upon arriving at Barry University in North Miami, I was a bit intimidated by the surrounding environment. Safety is very important and there is a lack of feeling safe outside of Barry's Campus. However, on the topic of attractions, activities, events, etc., there is so much you can do and so much to be done. Though I am a person who enjoys being locked up in her room, when I do go out, it is wonderful. I mean, it is Miami.
