The drug scenes depend from time to time and also the location.

Bates is making a strong push to increase the diversity of the student body and it shows! Minorities are well-integrated, and no social groups are exclusive to one race, religion, or sexuality. At Bates, everyone is accepted no matter who you are

Health & Safety:
Although we're not in the best area, I feel extremely safe on campus. Crime is pretty low; there's a real community here and everyone looks out for one another. I have no hesitations leaving my backpack with my laptop and wallet in the library while I go to grab lunch. Campus security is very friendly. The health center is great too. I've spent a hefty chunk of time in there, and got very close with all the staff, who are extremely helpful in setting up doctor's appointments and giving you what you need to get better!

Computers in every building, with a few big labs located throughout campus. A couple really nice mac labs. Printing is great in that you can print from anywhere on campus and pick it up in the library, but the lines to pick up your stuff can get long between classes. Wireless is provided across campus, but it can be pretty bad, although I think they're working on making it more reliable.

The weather gets a bad rep. But the fall in Maine is unrivaled - it's gorgeous and crisp. The winter is long, yes, but you get used to it, and the snow is beautiful. Bundle up and you'll survive. And since the winter is so long, when spring comes, it is absolutely magical for a few months!!

Not too bad. Campus security is really friendly and will hand out a million warnings before they get anyone in real trouble. The alcohol policy is very relaxed - unless you get caught with hard alcohol, which is banned campus-wide (but that doesn't mean people don't drink it. Again, not very strict).

Bates is gorgeous. The academic buildings are either brand new and pristine, or old and full of architectural and academic character. We only have one dining hall which is state of the art and brings such a warm community atmosphere. Campus events are plentiful, there is tons of outdoor green space.

Bates is inclusive and fun! If you're a partier, there are parties. If you're not, there's plenty to do for you too and shouldn't be afraid of the nightlife scene. School events like dances and shows are huge, and can get pretty rowdy.

Nightlife at Bates is what you make of it. Because of our isolation and lack of nightlife in Lewiston and lack of Greek Life, it's not your typical college scene. That said, Frye street, our campus houses, is alive and loud Thursday-Saturday, as are many of the dorms, and parties are incredibly inclusive to everyone. If partying's not your scene, there are always concerts, shows, and other activities put on by the school, as well as plenty of students who prefer to stay in at night. Plus, since Bates is so small, when school committees put on events, EVERYONE goes and the atmosphere is nuts! As lame as it may sound to non-Batesies, school dances are the place to be, these aint your high school homecomings!

The campus is diverse but the campus is struggling to come up with its own definition of diversity at the moment.

Housing is guaranteed all four years and the neighborhood around campus isn't that great
College Junior 2013-07-16T19:50:19Z
Its really good food, and they have a vegan bar! Lots of variety but can get repetitive
College Sophomore 2013-07-15T23:15:46Z
Even the worst of housing at Bates is pretty good! Some of the dorms are gorgeous and others are more run down, but all rooms are pretty big and it's really easy to avoid dorms you don't want.

Although Bates has a relatively short list of majors, each major has a plethora of options for your focus within that department. Also, the professors in each department are all immensely knowledgeable about the field in which they teach and I have been incredibly impressed with how happy they are to help students find the path within their majors that speaks loudest to their interests and passions.

I love social life at Bates. If you want to stay in and study it's totally acceptable, if you want a relaxed night with friends you can go to Olin for a $1 movie or chill at the Den, or if you want to get wild and crazy the house parties and campus-wide social events are a blast! With a bit of creativity and open-mindedness you can always have a fun, wacky time.

I don't bring my car to school so I'm not sure about parking but it is nice that all grades can have cars on campus if need be.

Lewiston/Auburn has a bit of a bad reputation, but for no reason. There's lots to do and so much character and life in Lewiston.

Drugs are virtually unheard of at Bates. Alcohol, on the other hand, is seen in abundance every weekend. We are not a dry campus, but there is no liquor allowed on campus. If someone is found in possession of it, they will get punished; if they are caught three times, they will be kicked out of school. This is a student-made policy. The security team understands college culture around drinking, so they are relatively lenient in some cases, but are very aware and cautious most of the time.

Campus traditions are amazing! Everyone is completely committed to doing them, bring the Bates community even closer. The college does an amazing job of hosting a plethora of events for the students, from huge dances to small coffee-house-style poetry nights.

Campus is beautiful, with the historic quad and renovations of old buildings. It has the friendliest atmosphere and you say hi to everyone walking past whether you've seen them before or not. There are no fraternities or sororities, so it is a 100% accepting social life: no one is ever denied entry from any group or party.

The academics at Bates are very rigorous. Most professors do a very good job keeping the work manageable and interesting however, so it rarely feels unbearable. The students are for the most part very academically inclined and hence very involved in their classes. Most students put in the work and this facilitates excellent in (and out) of class discussion.
College Senior 2013-04-04T02:50:52Z
I think there is a decent range of majors at Bates, but they are a bit understaffed in most of the departments (other than psych, econ, bio, etc.). With more professors we could get a broader view of the field. For instance, as a Gender Studies major, there is only one full-time professor. The professors that I have had thus far have been SUPER helpful with everything that I have gone to them with; from personal issues to academic.
College Senior 2013-04-04T02:45:27Z
Commons is usually delicious, and has a wide variety of foods. Sometimes the rotation can get a little stagnant, but there are always over 60 choices of cereal... Also the vegan food (coming from a non-vegan) is DELISH! And the desserts. And the omelets. I love Commons.
College Senior 2013-04-04T02:43:08Z
Most students (95-97%) live on campus, so this is not really something that most students are concerned with. I'm not a huge fan of the off-campus housing.
College Senior 2013-04-04T02:40:11Z
The nightlife at Bates is primarily centered around on campus events like dances, comedians, concerts, etc. There are a few bars in the area, but most students stay on campus. People are generally pretty accepting of having people come to their parties in the dorms and houses.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
