Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

IM sports are almost as big, if not bigger, than varsity sports at Bates. The football team has a less-than-stellar record, but Nordic skiing, squash, basketball, and club ice hockey enjoy more success. Generally, IM sports are the school’s main attraction, though they can go unnoticed by people who aren’t actually playing them. Although a high percentage of Bates students participate in some kind of athletics, sports aren’t really a focus at the school. There is a sports scene on campus, with athletes hanging out together and supporting each other at games, but it by no means dominates life on campus.

This is not to say that athletics aren’t important at Bates, but academics always take top priority. Thus, varsity sports at Bates are Division III, with the exception of Nordic skiing and squash, which are Division I. While this has led to a low profile concerning athletics at Bates, there is certainly no lack of opportunities for students to play. Between varsity, IM, and club sports, students with almost any level of interest can find something that suits them. Bates also offers a number of PE courses, such as yoga, ballroom dancing, indoor climbing, and RAD self-defense for women. Four PE credits are required to graduate, and these can be satisfied by taking PE courses or participating in other sporting options. Sorry guys, beer pong’s not included.

A lot of students play a varsity sport on campus, but the culture itself isn't so big. Students flock to bleachers for big rivalry games only.

Basketball and hockey games are popular. The football team sucks and is a waste of money. The track, sailing, and crew teams tend to have a pretty cohesive group, as does lacrosse. There are IM sports, but you won't get PE credit, which is totally lame.

Most Popular Sports

The Bates football team is something of a joke, but the school’s basketball team is very popular, often playing for a full house. Lacrosse and club ice hockey games are also very well-attended IM teams, particularly basketball, soccer, hockey and softball, are popular, with many students participating and going to matches. The Outing Club has a large membership; many students take advantage of the hiking opportunities available in Maine.

Most Overlooked Teams

Track and field, squash (because they compete off campus).

School Spirit

Many students at Bates are passionate, but few of them are passionate about Bates sports. People who play sports and have friends on sports teams have lots of school spirit, but others remain fairly apathetic. Most students busy themselves by rallying for causes such as saving the rainforests or stopping third-world sweatshops rather than devoting their energies to school spirit. Still, the school store does a brisk trade in clothing and supplies with the Bates logo; students are certainly not ashamed to be Batesies. Students are often drawn to Bates because of the people, and Batesies often maintain strong friendships outside of college. Most Batesies are willing to do anything to help out a fellow grad.

Getting Tickets

All Bates sporting events are free, with the exception of some NCAA events, and there is seldom any difficulty finding seats, even at major games.

Best Place to Take a Walk

For a short on-campus walk, there is a path around Lake Andrews, also known as The Puddle, that is popular among both students and Lewiston residents. Off campus, there is a path along the Androscoggin River, which is about a 10 or 15 minute walk from Bates. Thorncraig Bird Sanctuary is about a half-hour walk away, and it has a number of trails and an excellent view of Mount Washington. Mount David is a popular place to watch the sun rise and set.
