Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bates has a preponderance of hippies, but there are several other social groups, as well: jocks, nerds, preppies, and so on. When it comes to different types of people, you’ll find all ends of the spectrum at Bates. Batesies do tend to be attractive physically, but some people have complained about the shallowness exhibited by a portion of the student body. There are some students who spend all their time worrying about their hair and their clothes, some who worry more about saving the rainforest than showering, some who are too busy discovering a cure for the common cold to change their underwear, and some who think a sweaty T-shirt is the sexiest attire in the world.

Bates is a small campus, and before too long, students will be able to recognize just about everyone they pass, but you can definitely always count on meeting someone new. Since the school is so small, pretty much everybody knows everyone else’s business. Drunken hookups are common, and some people don’t even bother to get out of the hallway before they start messing around. Oftentimes, hallmates know each other's “secret code” that students write on the whiteboard to alert their roommate they have a guest in the room, so even those who fool around in their own rooms don’t have all that much privacy. Nearly everyone on campus is familiar with the “walk of shame” back to their own rooms the morning after, and some people choose to run, hoping no one will see them.

Lots of Athletes

There are a lot of athletes on campus, which makes for a very attractive student body. The guys are generally preppy and attractive. There are lots of outdoors-y guys (and girls) on campus who are really into hiking, frisbee, etc. The girls are mostly really preppy as well, but there is a sizable hipster population as well. The girls are generally attractive... mostly blonde if that's what you're into!

Bates is great because no matter what look or personality you're into, you will find it. Batesies come in a variety. Whether you're into hipsters, jocks, or intellects, there is a whole spectrum here. The gay scene is alive and well at Bates.

Facts

Social Scene

Students most often meet people while participating in clubs or sports. In their first year, students will make many of their new friends in their own dorms, but older students tend to stay with their established groups and interact with their dormmates mostly on a smile-and-say-hi level. Parties are obviously another way students interact socially, but most often, people at parties are too drunk to remember their “new best friends” the morning after. Many Bates students are very passionate about their interests, so they tend to hang out with people who have similar likings and concerns. Many Bates students are very passionate about their interests, so they tend to hang out with people who have similar likings and concerns; however, they branch out as well, so Bates in general is not a cliquey campus. Batesies tend to stay friends long after college.

Hookups or Relationships?

There is no middle ground in the Bates dating scene. Couples are either "just hooking up" or involved in serious relationships with wedding bells chiming faintly in the distance. Casual dating is almost unheard of, perhaps because of the difficulty of going on actual dates. (Many students don't have cars, and if taking the school shuttle to see a movie with your date is hardly romantic, meeting in the dining hall is even less so.) But with so many students partying on the weekends, hookups are incredibly common. Considering the intense friendships so many students develop at Bates, it is no surprise that serious relationships are just as prevalent.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Parties are where most people go to meet other singles, and most couples pair off by the end of the evening. For students who are interested in more serious relationships, the study lounges provided for each department are a good place to meet others with similar academic interests. Some school dances also provide good opportunities for people to interact. Gala, the spring semi-formal, for instance, gives students a chance to dress up prom-style and show off their dancing skills. And the whole point of Lick-It (an annual dance) is for students to wear their most revealing clothes and hook up with somebody.

Dress Code

Bates students follow a variety of styles. There are a few kids walking around in Eddie Bauer and J.Crew outfits, but they are certainly not the norm. It’s perfectly acceptable to go to class in pajama pants and a baggy T-shirt. Uggs and L.L. Bean boots are often worn on the coldest and most snowy days of winter. Spandex pants are common, even if you’re not on the track team and are often worn under a long shirt with boots or ballet flats. There is a sizable group of students who favor “hippie” clothing: Phish T-shirts and floral print dresses. Bates even has a few punk and goth kids sporting safety-pins and ripped fishnet tights. On the weekends, people get the most dressed up for parties. However, more casual outfits and jeans are also common. Some girls will put on dressier clothing, but many people just wear whatever they feel most comfortable in. Fashion at Bates is marked by its variety and by the casual attitude students have toward clothing and accessories.
