When it comes to academics, the old cliché, “You get what you pay for,” most encompasses Baylor’s mentality. The biggest complaint from students working toward a Bachelor of Science is that they feel like there’s too much emphasis placed on research, and for the most part, everyone feels that the teaching assistants are completely useless. In the Bachelor’s of Arts program, you know your professors are doing some kind of research since it’s a publish or perish world, but good luck actually catching one in the act. All-in-all the professors are approachable, reasonable, and if you’ve taken an interest in them and their work, they return the favor.

Waco is a small town. Students run into their professors all over the place. They all shop in the same mall and go to the same movie theaters. The relationship this fosters between students and professors says a lot about the family environment at Baylor. When you mix academics with personal relationships, the combination makes for a much higher standard of work. There are of course, some classes which you’ll feel are completely useless, and the size of Waco can also be a drawback. In general, the biggest advertisement of your successful academic career can be characterized by a smooth transition and integration into the town and the school. By coming to Baylor, you’ve just married an ideology and gained 13,000 in-laws. Baylor is much more about making connections and networking, and since everyone hates a nasty divorce, a student with moderate grades and the right attitude can go just as far as an introvert with a 4.0 GPA.

I find the teachers are genuinely interested in my success not only as a student, but as a person. While personalities don’t always match, the willingness and drive to make things work and/or succeed exists. I find many of my classes interesting, especially the ones that relate to my major that involve management and technology.

Did You Know?

On a Thursday in the spring of every year, Baylor has an all-University play day called Diadeloso. The literal Spanish translation is “day of the bear.” This day off from classes started in 1931 and includes tons of food, fun, and activities such as a guest hypnotist, a step-show performance, video game tournaments, intramural contests, and even blow-up fun with a moon-walk.

Baylor begins every year for incoming students with Welcome Week, which consists of an orientation and a meet-and-greet on moving day. Welcome Week also sets up upperclassmen-guided tours for freshmen and transfer students to show them around campus, discuss different aspects of life at Baylor, and educate students on the various social, religious, and athletic functions of campus life. A lot of life-long friends are met and made at Welcome Week.
