Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s little you can’t do with the on-campus computers. The wireless network, also known as Air Bear, spikes from time-to-time, but the library staff stays abreast of most problems. The two labs that are open twenty-four hours are completely different and act as a late-night hub for student activity. The Information Commons on the second floor of Moody Library is more of a group study area, and there are no quiet hours. The garden level lab is considered a “quiet study area,” and if your group work gets too loud, you’ll be asked to leave. Every semester, Student Technology Services hosts software clinics free to all students, faculty, and staff where you can learn programs such as Power Point, Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Fireworks. Typically the only complaints that ever go on with the computers on campus are that during finals there aren’t enough available. Baylor has been undergoing serious budget cuts in the last two years, so none of the computers have been replaced, and the allotment for printing and charges are relatively new.

There is a Baylor Book Store that has some decent discounts on software, so you can check that out if you’re in need. Online gamers eat up a lot of bandwidth once you’re plugged into the network if you’re living in a dorm, but for general computer usage, you’ll never run into any problems.

Printing is a little sketch. The computers are really nice didn't have a lot of problems with them. You need your own computer tho because checking blackboard is a daily requirement. Wireless is good but the do block things which can be annoying.

The Computer Lab and Wi-Fi.

Everything is very nice. There is always wi-fi, so if there are no available computers, you can always bring your own. The computers are nice, ranging from PCs to MACs. The network (both wired and wireless) is pretty fast and reliable in the library as a whole (the compter lab is in the basement of the library). However, the wi-fi outside kind've sucks depending on where you are in terms of reliability and speed. The computer lab is open all day and all night. There are many times when student stay overnight to study. There are many booths and tables that have large marker boards by them that anyone can use. It is somewhat crowded at times, but even then, you will have good chances of finding somewhere to sit.

One Is Such a Lonely Number

While there are plenty of computers and computer labs on campus, there really just are not enough. The student to computer ratio is probably 8:1 (in my opinion). They are all conveniently located in multiple buildings, but there simply are not enough.

Did You Know?

The Crouch Fine Arts Library houses one of the most renowned music libraries in the Southwest. The Library boasts 50,000 audio and video recordings and 75,000 music scores. Special computers with keyboards attached and virtual recording studios make this a popular place for music students or budding musicians to perfect their craft.

You can check out laptops for a four-hour renewable period from the Information Commons and Garden Level of Moody.

Currently the only locations on campus that offer color printing services for students are the Casey Computer Center and Baylor Duplicating. These locations charge a fee for color printing.

An online forum, known as the BIN, serves as a huge source of information for current students and incoming freshmen. Once you’re enrolled as a student, even before attending your first class, you can ask what classes to take, which professors to avoid, buy or sell furnishings, and ask any general question you want; all will be answered or discussed by students in one of the many online forums. Faculty members often visit the Web site to keep their pulse on student opinion. Visit the BIN at: www.bin.baylor.edu.
