College Prowler Take

It’s easy to get caught in the lazy, do-nothing attitude on the weekends and only spend time with the people in your dormitory hall. That’s the best way to get tired of Waco, and in a month you’ll be looking to transfer. Like every campus, Baylor has about a million different clubs, sororities, and fraternities, special interest groups, etc. with which you can get involved. All of them usually have some kind of weekend event or get-together going on. To keep from going nuts at Baylor, you’ve got to make friends that run in different social circles so that when one group doesn’t have anything going on, you can call the others and keep a full well of friends to draw on. The bars and clubs really only cater to these kinds of activities. You’ve got to go swim in a different pond and meet the people that make the experience worthwhile if you want to party all night.

The drawback to going to school in a relatively small town is that if you go out during the week, you’re going to see the same people every night. The bonus to only mingling at the college clubs is that you’ll meet some good friends to call when you’re feeling social. The advantage comes in handy when you’re tired of Waco, and want to catch a ride to Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and the other surrounding areas for a change of scenery, where nearly all Baylor students come from.

The on-campus party scene is somewhat more relaxed than it used to be, because of the party houses moving further away from campus, and school really cracking down. That said, if you want parties, they definitely exist and are a bunch of fun. There are at least a dozen major parties thrown each semester. The bars like George’s, Ninfa’s, La Fiesta, Cricket’s, and Halo are the most popular spots.

I would say Cricket’s is good for food and pool, but it’s too crowded most of the time. Halo is alright, but at least they’re alive and kicking. Scruffy’s, well everyone has to go to Scruffy’s and write on the wall—it’s just tradition. The place is a total dive, but a pretty fun one if you go on the right night.

Never go to a fraternity party. They are so lame, and unless you’re 18 or younger you will feel old and stupid, especially when the cops come and break it up and you are one of three people still standing next to the keg, and that’s when you realize that you should have gone to a bar.

Frat parties are great; however, after their rushing period is over and pledging begins, they stop talking to you. You have to make sure that the parties you go to don’t get busted.

As far as I’m concerned, there never really are any parties on campus. Baylor has many strict rules and poor visitation hours for dorms, so many students leave campus for entertainment. Many off-campus parties are individually thrown or associated with fraternities, and those areas become known to different crowds.

Facts

Club Crawler

Nightlife in Waco gets monotonous very quickly. Pace yourself in terms of bar-hopping, because the scene from place-to-place is basically the same. If you jack-rabbit the bars, you’ll be hopped out in a month. Everything closes at 2 a.m., but that’s when the after-parties start. On a weekend, after-parties are known to rage until sunrise, and you can usually find someone who’s throwing one at the bars. When the same boring scene just gets to be too much, students grab a ride and head to Austin or Dallas for a weekend.

Bar Prowler

The bars here really aren’t too bad. Most have a laid-back feel with decent music and a comfortable atmosphere. Depending where you go, the type of crowd varies. The biggest thing to be aware of is the difference between a Waco bar and a Baylor bar since the two generally don’t mingle. The college scene might get old, and you’ll get tired of seeing the same people, but unlike the restaurants, branching out in the nightlife can put a whole different spin on your evening

Organization Parties

Some fraternities and sororities will throw mixers or foam parties at clubs, or rent out a dance hall and have a party, but typically these things happen with school sponsorship on-campus. If there’s drinking involved, it’s at an off-campus house party.

Club Listings

Halo is a relatively new addition to the Waco scene. It has become a prominent dance. Dress lightly, though, because this place gets packed, and you’ll sweat bullets if you’re trying to dance. Specials include $2 wells on Friday and $1.25 Lonestars on Saturday.

Cricket’s seems to be one of the premiere places to be and to be seen. On the weekends, this place is packed with the college crowd. They have pool tables, shuffle board, and video games, but good luck getting one unless you get there at 9 p.m. You’ll have to fight your way to the bar, and stand there for a half hour until the bartender notices you, and even then you’ll be overcharged for the drinks. Big screen TVs are up front usually playing whatever sporting event is on, and when out of town teams come to play Baylor they usually party here. The atmosphere is nice during the week, but on weekends the place is a zoo. The crowd is typically all dressed the same, acts the same, and tends to get pretty sloppy as the night goes on, but if you’re looking for a place to meet new people in a relaxed environment, this is the place. IDs are checked heavily at the door, but you can get in under-21 if you’re going to the restaurant.

Home of the Big O, George’s is mainly a restaurant, but at night the bar is packed. Mostly known for the alumni that show up and a country music crowd, George’s offers a different scene than the rest of the Waco bars. George’s party tent is present for tailgaters and always full at football games. The bar closes at midnight, and it’s easy to get in and enjoy the environment under 21, but they do ID to drink.

Scruffy’s is the local neighborhood dive bar that has been around forever, is still popular, and no one knows why. The place reeks of stale smoke and beer, but their $5 Long Island ice teas will knock you down. There are pool tables in a different section of the bar where the air conditioning never works. You have to pay $.50/song on the jukebox, and part of their décor is walls covered in graffiti. It’s tradition to leave your mark somewhere in Scruffy’s before you graduate. They actually have some very good live bands come up from Austin, and even local bands play all the time. Despite the clouded and sketchy environment, Scruffy’s is packed on weekends. If you get there late, expect to wait in line. On Friday and Saturday nights, IDs are heavily checked. You will meet a lot of locals here, most of them are friendly and talkative, and some are content in keeping to themselves. Drawbacks? Well, the furniture is aging, and they haven’t spent much on décor or ambiance. But with beer prices ranging from $2 to $4, it’s well worth it.

What to Do if You're Not 21

Clicks has a bar, but it is mainly a pool hall. They have full-sized Brunswick tables and charge to play by the hour. This is a popular hangout for the 21-and-under crowd.
