Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Right across the street from campus, on the other side of I-35, lies the strip center of fast-food chains known as Fast-food Row, including Fazoli’s, Taco Cabana, and McAlister’s Deli. Even closer to campus is Dubl-R Burgers. In terms of eating off campus, the amount of choices and their variation are aplenty, even for a medium-sized city.

The saddest thing about Baylor students is that many of them won’t explore the privately-owned, non-chain dining options off campus. There are a million little places all over Waco, some of which are owned and operated by Baylor alumni, that are fantastic. The most popular places are regularly packed if you try to go during the dinner rush, either because of reputation or because most students aren’t willing to pay $7 and risk food poisoning in a place they’ve never heard of. The plus side to having so many of the chains is that you’re offered the consistency of regular restaurants whose specials and atmosphere are always predictable. The biggest perk about living in a college town, especially one where there really isn’t a whole lot to do in terms of nightlife, is that the restaurants do their best to make up for what everything else lacks.

Options, Options Everywhere

Waco provides many different options for eating out. There are so many different chains including Wataburger, Sonic, Taco Cabana, Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steakhouse, Wing Stop, Raising Canes, Wendy's, Applebees, and a ridiculous amount of others. Local favorites are Georges, which serves good old American food, Vitek's which is BBQ, Kitoks which is Korean BBQ, Cups which is burgers, and Cafe Cappucino which has great breakfast.

The Farther the Better

Most restaurants off-campus but close to Baylor is fast food. If you love fast food and need something fast and quick that is cheap, I don't think you would mind, but the farther from campus you travel, the better the food gets. About 3 miles away off of Valley Mills, there are a bunch of restaurants such as Rosa Maria, Pei Wei, Olive Garden and many more. I suggest getting farther away in order to really enjoy food.

Dine or No Dine?

There are a lot of fast food outlets close to Baylor on the other side. These include Taco Cabana, Jack in the Box, Arby's, Whataburger. There is also a good mix of Mexican, Italian, and Chinese Restaurants. Among students' favorites are Gratzianos, Baris, Bangkok Royale, and Cheddars. Waco doesn't have the biggest selection of restaurants but they are low budget and affordable for a college student and provide a welcome break from cafeteria food. They all offer great student discounts for Baylor students as well as college nights and special meal deals. Most of the restaurants also accept Bearbucks which are a mode of payment using your student ID.
