Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Moving off campus is not much more expensive. In some cases it’s actually cheaper depending on where you live. It can provide more space, a full kitchen, private bathrooms, no chaperoning, and total freedom concerning company. Living off campus at Baylor is part of the college experience. Baylor’s on-campus housing isn’t that bad, but the majority of students complete their requisite freshman year there and split for the surrounding apartments. It’s not hard to find something acceptable; in fact, the majority of the apartments near campus have revamped their services and are now affordable and nice.

All the apartments around campus are, at most, a few blocks more to walk than living in the dorms. A new parking garage was constructed right in the middle of all the off-campus housing as Baylor continues to gobble up the land surrounding campus. Housing isn’t hard to find, though Waco has a lot of “slum lords.” If you want to live really cheap, and don’t mind a short commute (ten to fifteen minutes), then you can live outside the streets closest to campus (i.e., the Baylor bubble). The rents are cheaper, but as Waco's safety and environment can be questionable, so most students opt to stay in the Baylor Bubble. The best part about a student body that almost lives entirely off campus is that no matter where you live, you’re bound to be surrounded by other students. Complexes such as the Outpost, University Parks, Baylor Plaza, and the new, fully furnished complex known as the Grove are notorious for housing almost nothing but students, so it’s not that different from living in the dorms—you just won’t have a camp counselor or have to share your bathroom with fifty other people.

Expensive

Anywhere in a college town the off-campus housing is going to be expensive. it is better to find a place with a group of friends to cut the costs.

Armed Robberies

Apartments are not cheap but there are many very close to campus. Unfortunately that is where all of the armed robberies take place. Expect about 10+ per semester. On the plus side, usually within 10 minutes after it happens, Baylor will send out a text to every student to stay indoors until the suspect has been apprehended.

Some of the apartments are really nice and very functional.

Both of the major property management companies in that area are awful. Expect no help once you've moved in. Brothers and Kelly

Look, Look, & Look!

There are PLENTY of places to live off-campus at Baylor. Finding the prefect place is the challenge! There are pretty cheap apartments but they aren't great quality. Make a list of what you're looking for-- price, number of rooms, distance form campus, safety of the area, etc. There are so many different ranges so set aside plenty of time to look around and be open to different possibilities. Always take a tour of any apartment complex/ house and be sure to ask lots of questions!! A place may seem perfect, but might have had a large number of robberies occur in the area, so be careful! Living off campus offers so much more freedom, I love it!
