The averages by season all seem very accurate, with the exception of summer. Make no mistake; it gets hot here in the summer. It’s no coincidence that Waco, known as the Heart of Texas, holds the acronym H.O.T. It is incredibly humid all year round, and even when classes start in the fall, don’t be surprised to show up to class soaked in sweat. Heat and sun stroke are common, mosquitoes are everywhere, and the news will blare all night about staying hydrated and keeping cool. Because of the heat, students go from their air conditioned apartments to their air conditioned cars to their air conditioned classrooms. Texas also has the saying “if you don’t like the weather here, wait five minutes,” because it always changes. Summer storms blow in and cool it off for a day, but the temperature climbs right back up.
On the flip side, the winters are pretty mild, and you’ll catch yourself spending many a Christmas in Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops. Spring is perfect as it’s just warm enough during the day. It still cools off significantly at night, but if you come here expecting four solid seasons, think again. Spring turns into a hot summer rapidly, and summer heat bleeds into the fall way past October. Somehow, if you were raised in it, it doesn’t seem so bad, but a lot of out-of-staters suffer miserably.
