Honestly, if you’re looking for a school that rallies around its athletic teams, Belmont may not be for you. The University doesn’t have a football team, and attendance at sporting events is notoriously low. People do get fired up about the basketball team, particularly when the Bruins face their rival Lipscomb University in the Battle of the Boulevard. There, you’ll see a more typical college athletics atmosphere, where students will paint their faces, make signs, and cheer for Belmont like they’re die-hard fans. For the past few years, the Bruins have made it to NCAA March Madness, and that is a huge deal on campus. In 2011, Belmont threw a viewing party in the Curb Event Center to watch the Bruins take on the Wisconsin Badgers, complete with gigantic video screens, contests, and TV cameras galore. Though the team ultimately lost the game, parties like this one are a nice tribute to Belmont’s school spirit.
And despite the lack of enthusiasm for most athletic teams, Belmont students do have a strong sense of pride in their school. Many students participate in intramurals, and the cheering at these games is usually just as good as school-sponsored ones because players recruit their friends and roommates. It’s just that Bruins are more likely to unite over the taping of the school’s PBS holiday special, “Christmas at Belmont” or one of the student music showcases than they are over sports.
