Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Honestly, if you’re looking for a school that rallies around its athletic teams, Belmont may not be for you. The University doesn’t have a football team, and attendance at sporting events is notoriously low. People do get fired up about the basketball team, particularly when the Bruins face their rival Lipscomb University in the Battle of the Boulevard. There, you’ll see a more typical college athletics atmosphere, where students will paint their faces, make signs, and cheer for Belmont like they’re die-hard fans. For the past few years, the Bruins have made it to NCAA March Madness, and that is a huge deal on campus. In 2011, Belmont threw a viewing party in the Curb Event Center to watch the Bruins take on the Wisconsin Badgers, complete with gigantic video screens, contests, and TV cameras galore. Though the team ultimately lost the game, parties like this one are a nice tribute to Belmont’s school spirit.

And despite the lack of enthusiasm for most athletic teams, Belmont students do have a strong sense of pride in their school. Many students participate in intramurals, and the cheering at these games is usually just as good as school-sponsored ones because players recruit their friends and roommates. It’s just that Bruins are more likely to unite over the taping of the school’s PBS holiday special, “Christmas at Belmont” or one of the student music showcases than they are over sports.

Unfortunately, Rather Average

Athletics haven't always been the biggest focus of my school; many of the athletes appear to be stuck-up and have a reputation for being proud. Many people don't support the athletic teams and choose to focus on their studies. The basketball team is the most supported sport in the school and I love attending their games in our stadium, but honestly many of the other athletic facilities are lacking compared to basketball.

For a Music School They Are Awesome

The school is a music oriented school and does not have a football team because it's a private christian college. But nonetheless the basketball team is phenomenal and their other sports are awesome as well they have 17 NCAA Division 1 sports teams. IM sports is pretty big as well, they also have a rock wall which is amazing because I'm not big on sports but rock climbing is right up my alley.

Most Popular Sports

Basketball is, without a doubt, the most popular sport on campus. Basketball helped put Belmont on the map after the team's appearances in the NCAA championship tournament. Soccer, tennis, baseball, and volleyball follow in popularity.

Most Overlooked Teams

Golf! There is so little said of the golf team that it is very easy to forget there is one at all. It’s a similar case with the women’s softball team. They’re there, but hardly anyone goes to their games.

School Spirit

School spirit is lacking, at least when it comes to sports. However, at the biggest basketball games (Battle of the Boulevard against Lipscomb, NCAA March Madness) students show up to support the team. People get much more excited about student music performances and the Belmont Showcase Series than they do about athletic events.

Getting Tickets

Students can go to home games for free—unless it's an NCAA tournament game—or any games played at Lipscomb University down the street. All you need to get in to these games is your student ID, so no tickets are necessary. Generally, only the supercommitted Bruins fans go to away games, but when the team makes the NCAA tournament, students organize road trips to watch them in action!

Best Place to Take a Walk

Percy Warner Park (trail), Fannie Mae/Dragon Park, Radnor Lake, Centennial Park, or Hillsboro Village are all great places to walk.

Did You Know? All patrons wishing to use the climbing wall in the Beaman Center must go through an orientation with the climbing wall assistants and pass a written and physical test.
