Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For all of its recent expansions, Belmont still only has one cafeteria for the entire student population. While it’s not exactly known for its expediency or five-star cuisine, the caf workers are all very friendly and will make you feel right at home. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the desserts are usually decent. The caf is the only location you can use your meal plan, so if you live in the dorms, you’ll be there a lot. All dorm residents are required to have meal plans—it’s optional for apartment residents and commuters. But whether or not you opt for a meal plan, it’s smart to buy some Bruin Bucks to use at other locations on campus. One Bruin Buck is equal to $1, and they’re accepted everywhere on campus. The Curb Café has a modern vibe and offers Quiznos, Wow Café & Wingery, and Mein Bowl Asian food. Try to avoid the lunch and dinner rush if you can—the lines get backed up quickly!

If you’re looking for something a little healthier, the library recently opened Bruin Grounds café, a sandwich and coffee shop where even the entrées have a literary flair. They serve everything from the "Curious George" peanut butter banana sandwich to the "Great Expectations" turkey and avocado pretzel roll! Pulling an all-night study session in the library? Bruin Grounds also offers plenty of sweets to give you a much-needed sugar rush. When you’re running in between classes and want to grab a snack, stop at either the Corner Court outside Massey Business Center or What’s Bruin in the Beaman. Both offer items like cereal, energy bars, and juice for students on the go. Bruin Bucks can also be used off campus at vendors like Papa John’s, Mafiaoza’s, Noshville, Beijing Chinese Restaurant, and Chago’s Cantina. Student government is working with Dining Services to add more locations, so stay tuned to MyBelmont for updates!

Seriously horrible for vegetarians.

As a vegetarian, I realize I am a minority, but I feel like I genuinely cannot eat healthily in the cafeteria. The vegetarian option is often protein-less, and any hope of getting protein is lost. The salad bar is stocked with ICEBERG lettuce which has the nutritional value of water. The other lettuce option is usually that weird purple lettuce that no one actually likes. Romaine lettuce is just as inexpensive as iceberg, or maybe slightly less, but is so much healthier. Breakfast at the caf is a complete waste of time, unless you happen to like rubbery scrambled eggs and stale biscuits. The pizza at Belmont is pretty consistently good, but obviously someone can't eat pizza everyday. It doesn't help that the cafeteria is much too small to accommodate Belmont's seriously increasing population.

One of the only good things about the caf is the workers, who are incredibly nice and helpful.

Absolutely Awful

The dining hall at Belmont is just downright terrible. The food is always questionable. The food is labeled, but I still end up questioning it. Belmont supposedly has the Grade D food plan from Sodexo and I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. (Prisons have the Grade C food plan.) As a prospective student though, you wouldn't think this because they buff up the caf and they bring in better-tasting food just to persuade you to think that they serve good food. You're better off eating out of a trashcan.

...Terrible.

There is definitely something to say about Belmont's food options. For starters, they put on a show for potential students. You think that Belmont serves their students pretty decent food in the cafe but then you learn that they put grade the food plan specifically for the days high schoolers visit. The food company that the school actually goes through is the same company that feeds Tennessee state prisons and the food is so nutritionally starved that you're hungry an hour later. Also, the hours of the cafe are completely ridiculous because they close the cafe at random times throughout the day and close for the day at 7 pm and at 6:15 on weekends. Needless to say, it's very common to miss your dinner.
