Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though Belmont has historically been a white, upper-class, Christian school, the administration is dedicated to increasing diversity on campus. It’s been a slow process, but the student body has continued to grow closer to representing the makeup of the United States over the past few years. Many Belmont students practice some denomination of Christianity, but with the school building a name for itself as a top music university, religious diversity is changing on campus, as well. There are students at Belmont who practice Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, agnosticism, and atheism. No matter what you believe, you’ll still have to attend 10 spiritual growth convocation events in order to graduate. Most of these have Christian overtones, but there are some events that are more focused on nature and meditation, if you don’t subscribe to those beliefs.

Sexual orientation is a bit of a touchy issue on campus, especially since Belmont was on the receiving end of a truckload of negative press regarding the subject in 2010. However, student organizations are working to bridge the gap between the LGBT and straight communities through education and open discussion. Students are generally accepting of all lifestyles. But the unique thing about Belmont is, first and foremost, it’s a community. Students and professors tend to focus on the things that unite them instead of highlighting their differences.

Everyone Is Welcome :)

At Belmont University you are a presented with an extremely accepting environment. This is a place where all of your views will be heard and appreciated for their worth. Often times people think that because Belmont University is a Christian campus that people will stick up their noses at people who are not like them but it is exactly the opposite.

Great Little School

Belmont University a great little school, located right outside of the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. The staff and students are nice, the campus is beautiful, and the classes are small in size. Like any college, there are some cons. Parking is somewhat of an issue, "white" is the predominant ethnicity, and tuition is on the higher side. It appears that good majors to get into at BU include Music Business and Business (both highly recognized). Overall, Belmont University is a great school if you like things on the small scale and kind of toned down.

Facts

Gay Pride

Though the Belmont administration has dealt with some controversy over this issue, students are very accepting of all lifestyles. Androgyny is almost "in fashion" at Belmont, so you'll probably spend some time wondering about some of your classmates' orientations. People prefer to keep their sexual orientations private, and if they share it, it’s between close friends. Bridge Builders attempts to unite the gay and straight communities at Belmont, and some of its members are openly gay.

Political Activity

You'll find students along every step of the political spectrum at Belmont. The College Republicans and Belmont Democrats are small groups, but they make up for their size with their passion. Politically active students can express their voices in the Right Aisle Review, a publication designed to foster open discussion.

Economic Status

Belmont's tuition obviously isn't cheap, and many students have wealthy parents who can afford to pay their way through college. However, more than 70 percent of Belmont students receive either merit-based or need-based financial aid. There are students at every economic level on campus, and it's generally not a divisive issue.

Most Common Religions

Belmont is a Christian university, so many students come from that background. However, with Belmont increasing its national profile as a top music school, religious diversity is growing on campus. There are students who practice Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, agnosticism, and atheism. No matter what your beliefs are, you're still required to attend 10 spiritual growth convocation events before graduation, but students will have no problem finding others who share their faith (or lack thereof) at Belmont.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a few minority clubs on campus, like the Black Student Association which promotes cultural awareness through events and forums. The BSA also hosts a popular annual cookout at the start of each school year to encourage students to get to know their classmates.
