Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Belmont has a beautiful campus. Students love showing it off when family and friends come to visit, and the administration takes pride in its upkeep. When the weather’s right, flowers are planted all around the campus, and the second they start to wilt, they’re replaced with a fresh batch. Students often joke that their tuition is going to the flower budget, but to the administration’s credit, the results are gorgeous. The path from the quad to the Bell Tower is frequently used for bridal party photo shoots in the spring. While Belmont isn’t very big, the campus has more than enough state-of-the-art facilities to keep students entertained. Underneath the Massey Business Center, a fully-equipped recording studio is available for students to book sessions. Ambitious music students might record their first EPs here, and they’ll usually recruit audio engineering majors to work the professional soundboard.

If you want to work off some extra energy, drop by the Beaman Student Life Center. The group fitness room hosts classes from ab sculpting to Zumba, and the weight room has plenty of treadmills and exercise equipment for students to use. Feeling adventurous? Climb the 30-foot rock wall and impress that cute girl in the lobby—the wall’s enclosed by glass windows so students can see in. The Curb Event Center is the most popular location for on-campus events. Home to the Showcase Series and the Bruins’ basketball and volleyball teams, its sheer size makes it a great location for outside events, as well. It’s hosted the Country Music Television Awards, keynote speaker Maya Angelou, and a 2008 presidential debate. And the best part? Because the events are on campus, Belmont students get to participate in it all.

Campus Is Gorgeous Year-Round

The landscaping at Belmont University is absolutely incredible. Year-round the lawns are green, the leaves are raked, and the flowers are constantly alive. This attracts many students to study outside in the nice weather, play frisbee, take naps in the lawn, and practice music outside. Being built on the property of the Belmont Mansion, the architecture is beautiful. Original gazebos and statues remain for students to view on their way to class.

Plenty of Stuff to Do on Campus

In the Beaman Student Life Center, there's a gym, a coffee shop, and places to study. The Beaman is connected to the Curb Event Center and Curb Cafe. The library has computer labs and plenty of places to study. The only negative comment I have is that there aren't enough practice rooms for music students...

Not Enough Parking

not enough parking. often times spaces are reserved for outside events. Shouldn't your students who are paying to go to school have parking priority? Everything else is good.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

Belmont has many different green initiatives, including a green roof on McWhorter Hall, the discontinuation of trays in the cafeteria (for water conservation), and the recycling of office paper across campus.

Favorite Things To Do

The student "Showcases" are a great way to check out Belmont's incredibly talented students. Throughout the year, the Curb Event Center will host student artists in different genres (Christian, country, rock, and urban/pop). At the end of the year, the winner of each showcase performs at the "Best of the Best," a must-see event—no matter what kind of music you listen to! Belmont's student performances are fantastic across the board, with Broadway-quality musicals, dances, and plays performed in the Massey Performing Arts Center (MPAC) and the Troutt Theater throughout the year. Aspiring musicians provide live music in the Curb Café nearly every night. If you're looking for a laugh, go to the Pembroke Date Auction (ladies get to bid on dates with the guys who live in Pembroke) or the Fall Follies, an SNL-style comedy show produced by students. Belmont is the kind of campus where you can walk around in the evening and run into a group of people sitting in a circle on the grass or in the gazebos with their instruments, making impromptu music. If you have an instrument or can sing, you’re welcome to join in. For a more educational activity, head to the Humanities Symposium, a week-long event put on by the humanities department that takes a topic (e.g., travel writing) and dissects it using speakers who are experienced on the topic, with activities, presentations, art shows, and discussions that involve students. The 2011 keynote speaker was Maya Angelou—with a name like hers behind the Humanities Symposium, it'll just keep getting better!
