Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you’ve ever been called a hipster, you’ll fit right in at Belmont. Skinny jeans, oversized glasses, and TOMS are trendy on campus—for guys and girls. Not all students fit that mold, but most have at least a small artsy streak. Students tend to dress their best on the weekends for two reasons: going downtown and going to church! Nashville nightlife is a lot of fun, and you might run into your classmates in a more casual environment if you’re listening to Belmont bands play a show at the Hard Rock Café. The city also has plenty of churches to choose from, and the ones geared toward college students can be a great place to meet people. While hookups may happen at some off-campus parties, Belmont students are geared for meaningful relationships. The campus is so small that you’ll likely have a few familiar faces in every class, and relationships sometimes grow from that.

Of course, Nashville is an ideal college town because you’ve got options—if you don’t find somebody you click with among your Belmont peers, Lipscomb and Vanderbilt practically bookend the campus. So venture out and meet some new people. Even if you don’t meet the girl or guy of your dreams, you’ll find a huge network of friends, and isn’t that what college is all about?

Diversity

Overall Belmont's student population is pretty diverse. It's heavily populated with music students, but that might be because I mostly associate with music students and have all my classes with them. Regardless of the reason, I'm not complaining. There are a lot of hipsters on campus. Fewer this year than last. Student dating is very common. There's quite a bit of diversity in how students dress and spend their leisure time. Belmont is a very social campus. I've also seen an increase in racial diversity within the last year which has been nice.

Facts

Social Scene

Belmont is definitely a social campus. On any given day, you'll see a guitarist strumming out a melody in one of the gazebos—and it won't be long before he's been joined by a singer and a drummer tapping out the beat on his legs. The music scene in Nashville is fantastic, and students often head downtown on the weekends to hear their friends play at one of the local venues.

Hookups or Relationships?

Thanks to Belmont's tight-knit community, students are more into committed relationships than random hookups.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

People tend to meet each other through classes, student organizations, and church. While the student center sounds like it would be a great place to meet new people, most students meet up with their group of friends there. It’s the same in the cafeteria: a lot of students eat there, and it’s full of people during lunch and dinner, but everyone tends to sit with people they already know.

Dress Code

Belmont is a music school, so fashion is important for students who want to be taken seriously. Ask somebody who doesn't attend the University how they view Belmont students, and they'll probably describe them as hipsters. This means cardigans, skinny jeans, scarves, and TOMS for guys and girls. Of course, not all students dress this way—Belmont is very diverse, and people with a wide variety of styles call it home.
