Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Beaman: Nickname for the Beaman Student Life Center, the main student center where students can lounge, group study, or work out
  • B-Po: Belmont Security officers are affectionately called "the B-Po." You'll see them on campus in squad cars or on bikes!
  • Convo: This refers to the convocation credit requirement each student needs to have completed in order to graduate (each student needs to have 60). There are six categories: C&A (Culture and Arts), AL (Academic Lecture), Faith (Faith and Development), PG (Personal Growth), Community Service, and Electives.
  • M-Pac: Massey Performing Arts Center, where a lot of music department concerts, musicals, operas, and large convos are held
  • Protected: These are events that can't take place while other events are going on. For example, basketball games are protected, so organizations can't hold meetings.
  • Stairway to Heaven: Guaranteed to give you buns, thighs, and calves of steel, this very steep, very tall set of steps connects the Hillside Apartments to the apartments at the top of the hill.
  • TT: Towering Traditions, which refers to the freshman orientation
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Failing to complete the convocation requirement can stand between you and graduation.
  • If faith is important to you, find a solid church home. Nashville has tons of churches, so shop around, but once you find one you like, stay there and get involved!
  • You are not restricted to the campus bookstore to buy your books for the semester.
  • You can't have alcohol on campus, nor can you have alcohol paraphernalia (doormats, posters, wine glasses, shot glasses—even if they're just there for decoration).
Tips to Succeed
  • Don't use up all of your allowed class absences at the beginning of the semester. Spread those puppies out.
  • Have fun, but work hard!
  • If at all possible, come with your car. Parking may stink, but things are more frustrating without one. If you don't have a car, though, don't freak out—Zipcars and buses will come to your rescue!
  • It could save you hundreds of dollars to buy your books from anywhere that doesn't overprice books. Check Amazon or campusbooks.com to compare the best rates.
  • Make use of your professors. They're experienced, and in case it hasn't been said enough, they want to help you. But seriously, they're great resources.
  • The first time you have a problem with financial aid, set up a meeting with one of the financial aid counselors. Get their work email address and then communicate only with them throughout the rest of your time at Belmont. This will work to your advantage because they'll become more invested in you and want to help you, and if you try to just call the main office line every time, you'll get six different answers to the same question.
  • You should probably spend your first couple of years knocking out convocation credits so they don't come back to haunt you a few weeks before you graduate. Chances are that by the time you're a junior or senior, you won't have time for convos.

Campus Life

Belmont offers students plenty to do on campus to promote student involvement and a community feeling. They do require students to obtain a certain amount of convocation credits, but they offer some interesting and sometimes fun convos. Also, since Belmont is a music school, they host many student-run concerts and occasional concerts with popular artists and bands performing-- Sara Bareilles performed this semester. In addition to events held, dorm life is not too bad. Regardless of the horror stories some have to tell, Belmont seems to have nice facilities and a community feel for all dorms.

Music City

Belmont is full of musicians. The music business program offers a unique opportunity for aspiring rock stars, studio musicians, and contract lawyers. Nashville is an excellent town to get hands-on experience in the field, and the community is awesome for learning because virtually everyone around you is doing the same thing you are.

Facts

Traditions
  • Battle of the Boulevard: Once a year in the spring semester, the great Bruin-Bison rivalry (Belmont-Lipscomb) is displayed in a basketball game. Belmont and Lipscomb are both on Belmont Boulevard, hence, the title of the game. This and Homecoming are the only two games that get the most people in the seats.
  • Dead Day: The day before finals, all Belmont classes are canceled. Students gather in the cafeteria for "Pancake Night," where University Ministries volunteers serve up free pancakes as students cram for the next day's exams.
  • Fall Follies: The once-a-year SNL-esque comedy show produced by students is one of the biggest events during the fall semester. This is when faculty, staff, and students get to come together, sit back, and laugh at themselves for about two hours.
  • Homecoming: While it's possible that non-Belmont people might come onto campus during Homecoming and not have the foggiest idea that it was Homecoming, students do celebrate the established college celebration. The campus newspaper even does a special issue dedicated to Homecoming.
  • Pembroke Date Auction: In what's become a tradition but started out as a way for the freshman men's dorm to raise funds, ladies (and some gentlemen) come out to see (and laugh at!) the men of Pembroke strutting their stuff down a runway for ladies to bid on for a date. Half of the money goes toward the date and the other half toward the dorm.
  • Showcases: Four music genre performances (Christian, urban/pop, rock, and cover) are spread out across the academic year, where four Belmont bands or individuals perform three original songs (except in the cover showcase, when artists give their unique twist to another artist's song). At the end of the showcase, judges (people from the music industry) deliberate and determine who won the showcase. The winners of the four will perform at the very last showcase toward the end of the year (the "Best of the Best" showcase).
  • The Towering Tradition: At the end of Welcome Week, the Towering Tradition leaders and the new students gather around the Bell Tower at night, holding lit candles and reciting what it means to have pride in Belmont. Everyone then circles the tower, and, if you are moved to do so, you may touch the tower. It gets pretty emotional.
  • Tuition Time-Out: This is the highly coveted prize opportunity at halftime during every home basketball game. A student is chosen from the audience to try and make a shot from half court. If he or she makes it, Belmont will pay that student's tuition for a semester.
Urban Legends
  • Bruin Hills Apartments used to be housing projects until Belmont acquired them.
  • Heron Hall, the women's dorm that is closest to the Adelicia Acklen mansion, is said to be haunted.
  • The home of Nashvillian socialite and businesswoman Adelicia Acklen, one of the wealthiest women of the Antebellum South, still stands on campus. The mansion is said to be haunted by those of Adelicia's children who died as children.
  • There's a mystery surrounding the tunnel beneath the Bell Tower. In front of the Bell Tower, a rusted grate hides stony steps that lead under the tower, but word is that there is a tunnel that leads farther than that, all the way to the mansion. There is also apparently a locked door that may hide secrets from the Civil War.
