Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sometimes, the greatest part of the meal at Commons is the names they give their dishes. There’s something they call “Enraged Pasta,” which I wouldn’t particularly recommend, and a couple times they made a cheese and hot dog soup that looked nauseating—not to mention the casserole-type things that looked an awful lot like a mixture of what was served at lunch. Commons can get pretty creative with their ingredients, and I’m convinced they know this, which is why we have the sandwich bar, grill, and the salad bar as staples when nobody wants to eat their latest culinary invention. One has to give them credit for cooking gigantic amounts of food, ranging from blech to belissimo, for a bunch of spoiled kids who are constantly looking for something to grumble about. The spaghetti is actually pretty impressive, as far as mass-production goes.

DK’s stands its mediocre ground as the “grill” on campus. You can get hamburgers and grilled cheese, and fried this and fried that, snacks, and apple slices with caramel dip. There is also a sandwich bar for those who are feeling grease-free. This is more of the place to stop by for lunch on your way to or in between classes. It’s not open on the weekends (no one would make the walk over there anyway), so you have to get your fill Monday through Friday, but avoid the rush hours. If anything, my biggest beef with the dining on campus in general is that we can’t use our meal plan for the Java Joint, and it would be nice to have more than two choices, but the situation as it stands doesn’t warrant many complaints.

Oh Boy....Just What You Would Expect

We have three "dining areas" on campus. Commons has the most selection and is probably the healthiest choice in that we can pick what we want. Unlike the other two options, we swipe our card once before a meal and then have unlimited access to food.

DK's is the second largest food place. If you want grilled food, this is the best option. But we do have a $5 limit to spend at dinner and even less at lunch.

Java Joint is the last option and is popular among the vegetarians, vegans, and people who don't eat. They have a wide selection of hot drinks. They only have wraps, sandwiches, chips, and other small things to grab on the go.

OK

Commons (the dining hall/cafeteria) gets a little creative sometimes, but there's always something tolerable. They make their own versions of Chinese, Indian, Mexican, etc. in addition to more normal cafeteria food. There's at least 1 vegetarian and 1 vegan option at every meal. Sometimes they have the Fresco Grille, where they make made-to-order stir fries, burritos, pastas, etc. There's also always a deli/sandwich place where you can get basically anything you'd want, plus panini grills if you want it toasted. The salad bar is huge and awesome. There are always 30-some kinds of cereals, and basically always bagels leftover from breakfast. PB&J is always out. There's a sundae bar every friday night, and a frozen yogurt machine the rest of the time, plus other desserts. The best part is, it's all-you-can eat. You swipe your card when you walk in, and you can get as much of whatever you want. They serve BLD on M-F, breakfast, brunch, and dinner on Saturdays, and breakfast and brunch on Sundays. Sunday dinner, you're on your own. People make food in the kitchens, go out, or order in. Sometimes clubs will make and sell food or have potlucks. Commons is located in Chapin Hall, on the residential side of campus.

DK's is the fast food place. The food is good, and fairly cheap. It's popular for lunch, and is usually crowded. It's on the first floor of Pearsons. Java Joint is the coffee shop/cafe. It has muffins/bagels, but also wraps, soups, and paninis. It's not open for dinner, and is in the basement of Pearsons. You can use your meal plan at both DKs and Java Joint. You get up to $2.25 for breakfast, $4.25 for lunch, and $4.75 for dinner. If you eat a lot and go over, you just make up the difference in cash.

Did You Know?
  • Every year, Commons creates an apple smorgasbord with freshly-picked apples, gourmet apple desserts, and apply main dishes to choose from.
  • Every once in a while, you'll see a long line on the left side of Commons. This is the Mongolian Barbecue, where students can pick out vegetables, meats, and sauces, and the chefs of Commons will stir-fry it for you right there—it's amazing.
  • Sometimes, the Food Dude comes around to all the tables and hands out special treats to everyone.
