Campus Strictness

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus security is sympathetic to the college situation. Or, rather, let’s say they know college students are going to drink, but they don’t let us have our cake and eat it, too. Everybody knows the Beloit philosophy on drinking, and for the most part, they follow suit without complaint. Security will give up their buddy status to reprimand people for acting stupid—and there are plenty of those types to go around. But if you are just hanging out and happen to have a drink in your hand, you need not run away from a security officer.

It seems, though, that more and more students are causing problems for the whole school by taking advantage of security’s “hey, we’re cool” attitude paired with the relaxed drinking policy. These people are not welcome at Beloit. So if you’re one of those guys (excuse me, persons) who just can’t control yourself with freedom to drink, we all ask you to consider another educational establishment. We’re all about the fun at Beloit College, but we don’t want our pseudo-Euro drinking atmosphere to get taken away because a couple people couldn’t figure out what their limits were. Other than that, campus strictness ain’t too bad.

Everything Goes

For someone who doesn't mind drunk student puking everywhere and wants to be as drunk as possible every night of the week, Beloit is for you. The security don't care what you do, and you often see drunk people talking to them. At first, I thought I would like this, but sometimes it's overkill. Sometimes, I would like a night where I don't see people doing a naked bell run on a Tuesday at two in the morning. But hey, that's just me.

Do What You Will, but Be Responsible

The policies are very relaxed here. Though drinking games are not allowed in dorms or other residential housing, the campus policy encourages students to be adult about drinking options. The security guards are very kind and understanding. One can tell that they are making sure that the students are okay, rather than hunting down offenders. However, if someone abuses alcohol they will have to talk to the Head of Residential Life and there are serious consequences if they continue to do so. Drug use on campus is much less relaxed, but if one is discreet about their use the are not likely to get caught.

No "Dry Campus" Delusions

Beloit has an alcohol "policy" and an alcohol "philosophy".

Policy is Wisconsin state law. It's illegal if you're under 21, it's illegal to supply people under 21.

Philosophy says that we're all adults, and if we're responsible enough to be independent, vote, and join the military, we're responsible enough to decide whether or not/how much to drink.

They have some restrictions like no drinking games and no hard stuff straight from the bottle, but they'll only enforce them if you give them a reason to. Official, registered parties technically can't serve alcohol since they're sponsored by the school, but there's nobody stopping you from drinking outside, and then going to the party.

Policy is only enacted if you give them a reason to. If security finds you passed out alone in the grass, they'll get you to the ER. If you're screaming on the quad at 3AM, they'll tell you to go home. I've never heard of someone getting ticketed here.

Drugs are a little different story. I've heard that weed gets overlooked most of the time on purpose, but if you're causing problems, they'll ticket you.

Just don't be obnoxious, and you'll be fine.

No other crazy rules that I'm aware of...
