College Prowler Take

The average computer-user on campus is happy with the facilities. Only the computer geeks, or the more technologically-spoiled ones, are complaining that the network goes down a lot, since they apparently know of some magic land where networks never go down. I’d say if you’re that Internet dependent, a network going down every once in a while might do you some good.

Beloit has computer labs all over, and so many students bring their own computer that the demand is usually well met. This is a good thing, especially if you don’t want to bother with bringing a computer to campus. The library might give you some problems during midterms and finals, but the Chapin computer lab is open 24 hours, as are both labs in Pearsons. Make sure you print papers and such way ahead of time, though, because you can easily run into problems there. If you have a computer and enough room in your car to haul it over, do it. It’s super convenient, and it will cut some stress when things come down to the wire and everyone without a computer is scrambling around with disks in their hands, trying to print their papers. You decide how social you want to be when you’re trying to get your work done.

I do not have a computer, and I have never had any trouble finding one to work with. Computer labs are rarely crowded and very accessible. If you do have your own computer (although it is not necessary), all dorm rooms are easily hooked up to the Internet.

The computer labs do get pretty crowded around midterms and finals when students are trying to get papers done. It’s always a good idea to bring your own computer if you can—not only because of that, but also because it can be an inconvenience to have to walk all the way to another building in the dead of winter in order to get your work done.

We have high-speed Internet, but the system goes down once in a while, and parts or all of the campus might lose Internet connection for a couple hours. The labs aren’t usually crowded, but I would definitely recommend bringing a computer and a printer of your own; it will definitely make things easier.

It’s a good idea to bring a computer, but it is definitely not a must. There are many computer labs on campus, all of which have Internet access, and a few are even open 24/7. There’s almost always spaces open in a given computer lab. The Internet is pretty fast, and the transfer rates between computers are incredible.

There are plenty of labs around campus; it is always nice to bring your own computer, though. I would highly suggest it.
