Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average computer-user on campus is happy with the facilities. Only the computer geeks, or the more technologically-spoiled ones, are complaining that the network goes down a lot, since they apparently know of some magic land where networks never go down. I’d say if you’re that Internet dependent, a network going down every once in a while might do you some good.

Beloit has computer labs all over, and so many students bring their own computer that the demand is usually well met. This is a good thing, especially if you don’t want to bother with bringing a computer to campus. The library might give you some problems during midterms and finals, but the Chapin computer lab is open 24 hours, as are both labs in Pearsons. Make sure you print papers and such way ahead of time, though, because you can easily run into problems there. If you have a computer and enough room in your car to haul it over, do it. It’s super convenient, and it will cut some stress when things come down to the wire and everyone without a computer is scrambling around with disks in their hands, trying to print their papers. You decide how social you want to be when you’re trying to get your work done.

Not Quite Modern, but Acceptable

The network is old, for sure, but still provides susceptible connections for students. There are labs everywhere around campus, and the cool thing is that you can print for free, even print in color, as long as the purpose if for education.

Save Yourself Some Stress, and Bring a Laptop

Computers are available in several locations on campus, including in some laboratories in the new science center, and wireless internet is available on the academic side. Maybe half of the computers have Microsoft Word, which can be a hassle for conserving formating, and the printers in the Chapin and Pearsons labs are often jammed or not functioning. During midterms, finals, and around lunch time, the computers are generally all being used. The school's focus on writing and the inability to guarantee a spot on the shared computers make a laptop and printer invaluable tools for success.

I do not have a computer, and I...

I do not have a computer, and I have never had any trouble finding one to work with. Computer labs are rarely crowded and very accessible. If you do have your own computer (although it is not necessary), all dorm rooms are easily hooked up to the Internet.
