Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Let me tell you something about diversity: it certainly ain’t about the color of your skin, so if you’re one of those lame-o’s that can’t figure diversity beyond that, you aren’t going to appreciate a place like Beloit. Beloit has such an eclectic blend of students, from way too smart, to just plain stupid, from rich to poor, from pretentious to even more pretentious, from cool to creepy—the list goes on. Plus, these crazies don’t just come from Wisconsin, but all kinds of different states and countries; it’s like an international student carnival. It’s not uncommon to walk by a couple of people not speaking English. You will (100 percent guaranteed) have a class with someone from another country every semester you spend at Beloit. It wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out to be every class, every semester. My jaw would not drop even in the slightest. Beloit is a small school, and the classes are small, so the concentration of international students (not to mention students from a million different backgrounds) can make conversation in class extremely multi-dimensional.

Of course, everybody is soaked in “liberal,” which can get pretty monotonous. Students who aren’t so liberal either shut their traps about it or get picked on all the time. This is just one area Beloit’s campus community needs to work on, before they can boast total tolerance.

Lots of White Students With White Guilt

This is a mostly white campus. There is a fair share of international students. Although the students don't come from very diverse backgrounds, everyone is pretty interested in and sensitive to issues of diversity. No one is insensitive and because of the liberal academic atmosphere things like race and gender studies and theories are discussed.

Diversity at Beloit

There are a lot of white students, but diversity is more than ethnicity. People come from all over the country, and world. Forty-eight states are represented. The religious diversity is high; I'm not sure what the majority is, if there is one. There are a lot of international students, but they tend to stick with each other. Politically, almost everyone is liberal, but this doesn't bother me because my interest in politics is not significant.

Facts

Gay Pride

Considering the liberalness of Beloit College, gay acceptance is pretty high. It's hard to find anyone who would speak out against gay rights or lifestyles. The Alliance is always trying to raise awareness about gay and lesbian issues on campus.

Political Activity

You can count on Beloit to take a liberal stance on any subject. Protests are on-going, and they're perhaps one of the most common events on campus. Lots of petitions, trips to Washington DC, flyers about injustice, and the like.

Economic Status

The range starts at the scraping the bottom of the barrel and climbs all the way to the students money.

Most Common Religions

Atheism/agnosticism is pretty popular. There is a sizable Christian group, but the pagans are definitely a rival for them. There is also a strong Jewish community on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There is a variety of minority clubs to choose from, which is good since everybody has a little bit of minority in them somewhere along the line. Some clubs keep to themselves throughout the year; others let their mighty minority roar sound through the campus. BSU is quite prominent, as well as the Alliance, and the Women' Center.
