Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Blue House: A house near campus where students always live and where parties are fairly often thrown.
  • BSFFA (pronounced “bis-fa”): The Beloit Science Fiction and Fantasy Association. They’re the ones that have sword fights at night. They also pretty much make up the student government.
  • Chamberlin Rat: Somebody who spends a lot of time in Chamberlin, the science building.
  • Div I/II/III Courses: The divisions that courses are compartmentalized into.
  • FACS: Field and Career Services
  • Folk ‘n’ Blues: A music festival held at Beloit College, or the popular musical genre.
  • FYI: First-Year Initiative. Once you officially become a student of Beloit College, you get to choose an FYI course (they all revolve around a particular theme each year). Your professor for this course is also your advisor until you declare a major.
  • MI: Morse-Ingersoll Hall. Also a building where classes are.
  • Mindset List: Tom McBride, an English professor, compiles a list of incoming students’ supposed mindsets (for example, “Mail has always been electronic” or something along those lines). He gets a lot of attention for it.
  • Snacks: Commons makes snacks during finals for the students. It’s not just a general term. I mean, everyone knows what snacks are, but this is Snacks.
  • Spring Day: A day in April where nobody goes to class, campus bands entertain the student body, childish games are played, and all around a good time appears to be had. Of course, the night before yields even more fun.
  • WAC: The World Affairs Center. A building where classes are.
  • The Wall: The handicap access ramp between the ‘64 halls. This is the place where people like to hang out, handicapped or not.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Bigger, more impressive words.
  • The campus is super liberal.
  • The town is a dud.

Experience, Education, and the Time of Your Life

There isn't anything inherently wrong in Beloit. The professors, planning commitee, and the students are all happy to help you out. It is very easy to become involved on campus with little to no experience outside of the college. The only downside is that there is the odd professor who isn't as dedicated as others to the students and the class, but this is extremely rare.

I'm Very Lucky to Go Here.

Because Beloit college is small so all the professors and faculty are really invested in your success. That means they provide you with unlimited amounts of help and attention. If you are struggling in or outside of the classroom, there will always be a support system available to you. They also do a great job advising you if you don't know what you want to major in. The social scene is incredible. Although living far away from a major urban center has its drawbacks, I think it also makes campus life that much greater because Beloit students have mastered the art of making their own fun. They bring a lot of local bands in to preform and lots of student activities. If you want something to happen on campus, there is always a way to make it happen. I think what makes the college so great is how much everyone likes being here.

A Mixed Bag

Beloit is a great school for many reasons, but also can be very difficult. The diversity of the student body is wonderful, the classes are great, and the opportunities to study abroad and receive grant funding are excellent. The social scene, though, can be very bad because the school is so small. It is very cliquey, and gossip travels fast. Sometimes it seems like students enjoy most talking about others, even spreading malicious rumors and lies. Since the town of Beloit is so small and isolated, it is almost impossible to get away for some breathing time. The "Beloit Bubble" is very real and can be a good thing for students who always enjoy being on campus, doing only campus activities, and seeing the same people day in and day out, but it can be suffocating for students who feel otherwise.
