So Beloit isn’t the most exciting town in Wisconsin. The jig is up. Still, you won’t see Beloit College hiding a red face, because people over there work to at least keep the campus lively. Generally, there’s something happening on campus; it’s up to you to decide how lame it is. Those of you who have friends know that the setting doesn’t always make the fun, and sometimes sitting can be just as entertaining as a night on the town. The Van Galder bus drivers will be happy to drive you to the nearest big cities (that is, Madison and Chicago) for a fee if you’re itching for a little change. Otherwise, take a romantic stroll along the Rock River, treat yourself to a dilly bar at the Dairy Queen, hug a few campus trees, take a walk to admire the beautiful houses (some are pretty amazing), or protest on the weekends. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a flock of BSFFAs (Beloit Science-Fiction and Fantasy Assocation) in the middle of one of their midnight battles, or maybe you’ll even be in one of their midnight battles, depending on your relationship with science fiction.

The thing you have to realize is that Beloit is boring, but Beloit College can always be entertaining if you’re looking to be entertained. Sometimes, though, even that is boring. What I’m trying to say is, I go to school there and I still have fun, even when I’m bored.

Oh man, I love this question. Are there any other universities in Beloit? Ha! Yeah, right! Fun stuff to do? Aside from Wal-Mart and Applebee’s, there ain’t a whole lot going on; at least, that’s what you think until you discover you can buy Blatz beer at seven dollars for a 24-case, and that there’s a restaurant called ‘Restaurant’ with concrete floors, and that the giant can of Hormel chili right off I-90 looks glorious in the moonlight. Oh, and the old factory across the street from campus has suffered several burglary attempts. Hey, be the first to succeed! Most of the windows are already half-punched out, so you don’t even have that much work ahead of you.

There’s not much of a town, unfortunately. A serious drawback at the beginning of my college search—the lack of local activity—meant very little once I visited the campus and spoke with students and professors.

The atmosphere isn’t really existent. There is no involvement in the community outside of the Merrill Center. But although there is not much community involvement, students make up for it by volunteering in the community center. We’re the only university in the area. Stay away from the angel museum—it’s awful.

There is absolutely nothing in Beloit, WI. The Wal-Mart is the cultural center of our town. Luckily, the college keeps students happy by filling weekends with organized activities and inviting bands to campus.

In Beloit, what you see is what you get. Oh, so you see nothing? Well, that’s because there isn’t anything. I guess there are a few choice eateries and a shady bar, but on the whole, the town offers little more than police sirens. This has really not influenced my experience at all, though. Generally, the people at student events plan so much for on-campus entertainment that is actually fun that you wouldn’t really need to leave. Also, the people that generally come to Beloit are so ingenious; fun is rarely unable to be had.
