Experience, Education, and the Time of Your Life

There isn't anything inherently wrong in Beloit. The professors, planning commitee, and the students are all happy to help you out. It is very easy to become involved on campus with little to no experience outside of the college. The only downside is that there is the odd professor who isn't as dedicated as others to the students and the class, but this is extremely rare.

Health & Safety at Beloit College

Not Too Shabby

Although there is a lot of crime outside the campus in the city, the campus itself is very safe. You never have to worry about walking from one place to another late at night as long as you are on campus. Stealing is not a huge issue. The security officers are awesome. They are helpful and understanding and really cool just to talk to. I think the relaxed alcohol policy helps make the campus a safer place to drink. No one is afraid to call security if their friend has had too much to drink because they know they are just going to try to help make sure they are safe instead of try to get you in trouble.

I'm Very Lucky to Go Here.

Because Beloit college is small so all the professors and faculty are really invested in your success. That means they provide you with unlimited amounts of help and attention. If you are struggling in or outside of the classroom, there will always be a support system available to you. They also do a great job advising you if you don't know what you want to major in. The social scene is incredible. Although living far away from a major urban center has its drawbacks, I think it also makes campus life that much greater because Beloit students have mastered the art of making their own fun. They bring a lot of local bands in to preform and lots of student activities. If you want something to happen on campus, there is always a way to make it happen. I think what makes the college so great is how much everyone likes being here.

No "Dry Campus" Delusions

Beloit has an alcohol "policy" and an alcohol "philosophy".

Policy is Wisconsin state law. It's illegal if you're under 21, it's illegal to supply people under 21.

Philosophy says that we're all adults, and if we're responsible enough to be independent, vote, and join the military, we're responsible enough to decide whether or not/how much to drink.

They have some restrictions like no drinking games and no hard stuff straight from the bottle, but they'll only enforce them if you give them a reason to. Official, registered parties technically can't serve alcohol since they're sponsored by the school, but there's nobody stopping you from drinking outside, and then going to the party.

Policy is only enacted if you give them a reason to. If security finds you passed out alone in the grass, they'll get you to the ER. If you're screaming on the quad at 3AM, they'll tell you to go home. I've never heard of someone getting ticketed here.

Drugs are a little different story. I've heard that weed gets overlooked most of the time on purpose, but if you're causing problems, they'll ticket you.

Just don't be obnoxious, and you'll be fine.

No other crazy rules that I'm aware of...

Overall Experience at Beloit College

Overall, I see Beloit as a place...

Overall, I see Beloit as a place that offers a good education, but little in regards to helping me grow socially as an adult. If you know what you want to major in, and Beloit offers it, then you will get a great education. If you do not know what you want to major in, then Beloit is small enough that you can get into a variety of classes without a declared major, so you can explore. As an individual who did not know what I wanted to major in, I felt that my options were limited at Beloit. I knew that I wanted to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, but despite Beloit’s good reputation as a school that can facilitate study abroad experiences, I had a tremendously daunting experience trying to find a program for me. I declared a major that I love, but I wanted more. Feeling trapped, I took a semester off after two and a half years at Beloit. By the end of that semester off, I had decided to transfer to a larger public school. The hardest thing about leaving Beloit was leaving the people who had impacted me greatly.

Some chick thought I was crazy for not being cold wearing just a hoodie in October, when it was probably around 40 degrees (that’s not cold!). She was already wearing her stupid North Face down coat, but she’s from California, so she doesn’t know what’s up.

Their policy is that we are adults and that we should make our own decisions. I mean, security will make sure that someone who has been drinking has a sober friend with them, and they will take things such as pot if they see students with it or if it is smelled in the hall of a dorm, but I think it is fairly relaxed. That may be changing, though.

Not very. Beloit is a wet campus, meaning underage drinking is allowed, and campus police just control those who get a little out of hand; in my opinion, though, I think they are too light about it. And be sure to check the Round Table (the school paper) to see the latest hilarious security report on drunken outbursts and other weird happenings among students that weekend.

It seems to be pretty minimal. There are less hard drugs here than there were in my high school. Pot is relatively common, but most people take their studies too seriously to be messing with hard drugs.

The drug scene is moderate. Of those who do drugs, there are those who do any and every drug, and others who just stick to smoking marijuana. There are a lot of people who smoke marijuana, but overall, there doesn’t appear to be an out-of-control problem. And athletes, though they sign a release form, are not tested; many would not otherwise be eligible.

People do drugs here. It’s a liberal arts school, and there are bound to be people here who do all kinds of drugs. There’s no pressure to do it, and there’s no one handing you a bong telling you to smoke up.

Varsity sports are a big part of some people’s lives, but not a huge part of the school in general. I love varsity sports here because it is competitive enough to be enjoyable, but also, because it is possible to do varsity sports and other things, too. IM sports are probably one of the things on campus that get more support than anything else (especially ultimate Frisbee), and everyone can participate. Major campus-wide bonding experiences come through IMs.

I have some hot friends I could hook you up with—no, actually, if you happen to be attractive (and preferably, male, but I don’t even care anymore) then I really must insist that you come to Beloit. But do it fast, because this is my last year. Well, too late, but come here anyway—it could use people like you.

It’s not hard to find a place to rent off campus, and it is cheap. If you choose to live with a group of friends, sometimes the price can beat campus housing. However, very few students choose to live off campus— probably because of all the things there are to do on campus. In general, living in the dorms is a pleasure, and it allows a lot of social opportunities which would be missed if you lived off campus.

If you like peace, quiet, and...

If you like peace, quiet, and newly-built buildings go for Maurer, Chapin, Brannon, or Aldrich. If you want a single, however, your best bet would be the ‘64 halls, which are older but certainly not outdated in their technology. The ‘64 halls range from being full of activity, partying, and vandalism (Peet Hall) to the designated quiet floors in Blaisdell or Bushnell. By far the most coveted dorms on the campus are in Haven and Wood, which are generally snatched up by upperclassmen and special-interest groups before any freshman or sophomore can get to them. But it’s really not that big of a deal because all the dorms are of good size, with good facilities, and overall great people.

Denali’s serves grill food, and it is excellent. In addition to a Perkins and a Culvers, there is a Chinese buffet near Wal-Mart that has nice food. In Rockford, about 20 miles south, there is a fantastic Benihana-style Japanese restaurant. In addition to real restaurants, there are all of the fast food staples: Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, KFC, Fazoli’s, and Arby’s.

The athletic program is focused on...

The athletic program is focused on varsity sports; thus, if you’re involved in a varsity sport, the facilities are fairly nice. On the other hand, if you prefer intramural sports, you’ll get virtually no funding, and it’ll be difficult to use any of the facilities for practicing or having fun, as they are constantly booked by the varsity teams. Aside from a couple dormitories, the campus facilities are nice. The science center could use a makeover, but the equipment and space is perfectly functional.

Oh man, I love this question. Are there any other universities in Beloit? Ha! Yeah, right! Fun stuff to do? Aside from Wal-Mart and Applebee’s, there ain’t a whole lot going on; at least, that’s what you think until you discover you can buy Blatz beer at seven dollars for a 24-case, and that there’s a restaurant called ‘Restaurant’ with concrete floors, and that the giant can of Hormel chili right off I-90 looks glorious in the moonlight. Oh, and the old factory across the street from campus has suffered several burglary attempts. Hey, be the first to succeed! Most of the windows are already half-punched out, so you don’t even have that much work ahead of you.
