Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Judging by the lack of wordy, detailed comments, it’s safe to say that public transportation in Beloit is a flop. Some people don’t even realize it exists. Really, everything is within walking distance, with the exception of Wal-Mart (though it is rumored some people have ventured so far). And with the college driving you all over the place once a week, you don’t have any room to complain.

The lack of an efficient public transportation system reflects the lack of need for one. You’ll make friends with a car-owner and make him or her drive you to Wal-Mart or the movies when it’s convenient for the both of you. If you are aching to get the H out of town, Van Galder will help you out with that, offering services to and from Madison and Chicago. And those bus drivers are the nicest people in the world. The bus stop is a bit of a walk, but if you ask nicely, security will grudgingly give you a ride.

A Remote, Far Far Away City

Like many other liberal art school, Beloit college is located in a very small city, therefore the only popular transportation is bus. The college does have vans to take students to Walmart once every week. But other than that, having a car here is the best way to get out of town.

Campus Shuttles Rock

Since most people are from out-of-state, Beloit will take you to the Van Galder (Coach) bus stop for free, and that will take you to either Madison or Chicago. Van Galder is cheap too. Probably cheaper than the gas if you were to drive.

They also run shuttles to WalMart and other places in town every Wednesday night, and some Sundays. They're always free.

I personally have never used the public bus system (I don't think most people do) but I know you can use it to get to Woodman's (really awesome grocery store). Other than shopping or a movie, there's really no reason to be off campus somewhere that you couldn't walk to. Downtown Beloit is right next to campus, so lots of restaurants, banks, etc. are right there.

Campus is small. From one corner to the other is probably 10, maybe 15 minutes walking. The Hendricks Center (performing arts) is in downtown Beloit, about a block or two away from campus. A lot of people ride bikes, but they're definitely not necessary. Driving to class is practically impossible, and would definitely take longer than walking.

Parking is free, so some WI/IL and some out-of-state kids have cars. There's a ride board in the basement of Pearsons where you can post if you have or need a ride somewhere out-of-town so that people can carpool. Most people offer to split the gas and buy snacks.

Shuttles

There are shuttles at Beloit every Wednesday and Sunday night which take students to usually where ever they want to go in the city to do shopping. Occasionally there is also free transportation to bigger nearby cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison.
