College Prowler Take

If there is one negative aspect about the security on campus, it is the fact that no matter where you are on campus, you can’t avoid running into Campus Police (CP). Most students understand that the strong police presence isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and the joke is often, “Don’t they have something better to do with their time?” The truth is, no, they don’t. The campus is extremely safe, with the exception of the usual weekend stupid drunken incident, and students can walk around late at night without worry. CP doesn’t take the safety for granted, though, and they offer various self-defense workshops for students and provide ongoing training to the officers.

Due to the lack of real crime on campus, it does leave the officers with a lot of free time. If you graduate without getting at least one parking violation from Campus Police, consider yourself blessed. Most students facetiously wish there was more for the officers to do because, on average, you will receive two parking violations in your four years here, and you can expect to pay around $150 in fines. The overall attitude toward Campus Police is negative, which is unfortunate, but students know that in the event of an emergency, CP will be there in record time ready to handle the situation, whether it’s an incident of vandalism, a fight, or a fire alarm set off by burnt popcorn.

Campus Police can be annoying, especially with speeders and such, so if you are habitually late for class, living on campus is a must.
