Support Group – Students support each other to excel, it is awesome being around musicians from all over the world.

You Better Love It – If you don't love music...I mean really LOVE it...you will hate this school. The "core" academics (performance, theory, and composition) are excellent. However, the social scene consists of alcohol and nothing else. I had to join clubs and events at Boston University instead.

Berklee is an urban campus. Students who live on-campus cannot bring cars because there is literally nowhere to put them. Most students live off-campus, and if they do have cars, they can park at their apartments.

One Sport. One Team. Students do not go to Berklee for sports. There is one hockey team. Any male student can join it. There is a running joke here: "Berklee football. Undefeated since 1951."

Boston is most easily accessible by public transportation. You can get anywhere by train and bus. The trains run from 6am to midnight and the buses run up until 3 or 4 in the morning which is very convenient when you are practicing or working on a project late into the night at school. The train lines are easy to maneuver and pretty safe as long as you have common sense.

Not a Big Deal – The life of a Berklee student goes like this: wake up, go to class, practice, go to class, audition, practice, practice, practice. Some nights you do not sleep because everyone who is there is doing what they love so school is the number one priority. Music, music, music- doesn't leave much room for anything else.

Great in Quality! Berklee is a small school compared to others with a student body of about 4,000. The college is located in the Back Bay area of Boston with a few buildings spread out within a few blocks. Although there aren't many buildings, the facilities are equipped with the absolute BEST! From many practice rooms to state of the art studios available for use 24/7, you get all you need within the walls of these buildings.

Night/Social Life – It's great for the average age of a college student. If you're younger or older, not so much.

The attitude is excellent, the best. Should be held up as an example to all places.

It's a lot of hard work and expectations are high. You'll get everything you need to succeed if you're willing to work hard and play hard!

When it comes to the dining experience, the food is average. But it's The Caf experience that you won't find anywhere else. Students performing music with the forks, spoons, knives, tables, plates, glasses, etc. Everybody is united, knowing each other, in The Caf.

It gets cold, and it snows heavily sometimes. Bring some boots and bundle up! I would say the average fall/spring temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. In winter the average is 25 degrees.

Guys & Girls:
70% Male – Music tends to be a male-dominated field so it's not surprising that the college is only 30% female. It is also interesting to note, based on my personal observations, that it is mostly the girls who end up transferring from Berklee. The school does have many talented girls and any girl who is confident in their musicality should not have any qualms about attending this school.

Not a Nightmare – Berklee's dining hall is better than average. You do have to be careful about what you get to eat because while most of the food offered is edible :) there are a few choices that taste terrible. After learning to avoid the strangely named soups and burgers, I found myself very satisfied with my dining hall meals.
The college is also located by many great restaurants so you can count on having a good meal without having to pack your own lunch.

There really isn't very much strictness at Berklee...some teachers have strict attendance policies where if you miss a certain number of classes, it affects your grade. Other than that, there isn't much. However, if you're part of the housing program and you get into a fight, you can be kicked out of the program. Drinking in dorms under age 21 is also grounds to be kicked out, as is allowing it to happen even if you don't participate. There are basic housing rules to follow--no theft, no bigotry, no loud noise (although that isn't held up firmly), no drugs.

Berklee Housing – There are three Berklee dorm buildings. The 150 Mass Ave building is the most newly renovated. Each room comes with a private bathroom. Most rooms are triples unless you request a double or, if you're an upperclassman, a single. The A/C and heater work year-round. The dining hall is in the same building, as are most of the classes, and it is the most central dorm. However, the dorm has a hotel feel, so the social atmosphere isn't as good as it is at the other dorms. 270 Commonwealth is a ten or fifteen minute walk from the 150 building. Most rooms are triples, and there are communal bathrooms. The heater works, but the A/C doesn't (although in Boston, you really only need it for two weeks of the year). It has a great social atmosphere. 98 Hemenway is about a ten minute walk from the 150 building in the opposite direction from 270. Its social atmosphere is decent. It also has heating. Room are one double and either another double or one single set up in a suite setting with a bathroom to share between the three or four people. You need two keys, one to enter the suite, one to enter your room. The cost is not very good at all--leasing an apartment off-campus is usually about the same price, if not less expensive. If you're in the residence halls, you're required to be a part of the meal plan, which is the same cost as housing ($7000 for a total of $14000/year for housing and meal plan).

Health & Safety:
Campus Security--Very Effective – Campus security is very active; they have security guards posted outside all residence buildings, and you have to show your ID to get into the residence halls. Two of the three dorms even have card readers in addition to security guards. You can also call campus security to walk you to any one of the Berklee buildings. They have a hotline you can call anytime. Occasionally there is theft, but I haven't experienced it, and I don't personally know anyone who has.

Clean as a Rusty Whistle – Berklee is a pretty clean campus on the surface. Musicians and cigarettes seem to go hand-in-hand here, because almost everyone smokes. The school in no way promotes this sort of behavior, in fact, the administration just passed a new rule stating that smoking was forbidden within 25 feet of all campus building entrances. Drinking is a pretty standard activity on weekends, but I've rarely seen anyone get out of control who was a student at Berklee. The student population is generally very focused and professional. We have our fun, but our goals generally outweigh our good time. Beyond that, drug use isn't drastic, and it also depends on the crowd you hang out with. Smoking is a pretty common activity amongst students, but again, it's never to the point of causing problems.

Bring Your Own, Make Your Own – Berklee is a very big school, and though we have many clubs and activities going on, the nightlife aspect is really at the mercy of the city of Boston. There are no sororities or frats, and many clubs are performance-based. So, students often venture to other campuses, have house parties, go to/play in shows, etc. Most of the clubs are 21+, or are pretty expensive. The most fun I've had is at friend's houses, where we spend hours simply playing music together, cooking, partying, and overall making our own fun. I feel I've gotten to know people a lot better when the atmosphere is more personal, with a good crowd.

Apartment Life – I don't necessarily live on campus, but I live very close. Living in an apartment has taught me a lot about being mature, and how to take complete care of myself. I've become an excellent cook and often make food for friends, which is a great social outlet on nights when there isn't a lot going on. It's peaceful, clean, and a great study space. It's wonderful to be able to be at school all day and come home to a place that's truly one's own.
College Senior 2011-01-12T01:18:21Z
Not Very Successful – You can always get loans and such to pay for your schooling, but scholarships through the school are incredibly difficult to get. The school is supposedly raising its scholarship funds, but it is still a competitive and unreliable source of financial aid. It is also a very expensive college.
College Senior 2011-01-12T01:16:51Z
Does Affect, but Not Much – Boston gets a little bit of everything, heat, rain, snow. However school is off during most of winter, so snow is rarely an issue. and the buildings are relatively close to each other so walking outside during say, the rain, shouldn't be too much of a problem. There are plenty of nice days wheather-wise.

Berklee has the usual college rules relating to hat is acceptable behavior on campus.Have common sense in your social behavior,"don't act like a fool".

The Athletic Activity at Berklee Is Almost None at All. Berklee is a College of Music;it is not a traditional University with a Athletic department. If you come to Berklee looking for a football and/or basketball team team to support on weekends you are certainly at the wrong place.
